Faster Incremental Backups Using the Changelist Feature for Dell EMC Isilon/PowerScale

When you have a large number of files to backup in a data set, and even if only a few files were modified, the regular file system incremental backup operations scans all the files in the dataset to check for changes which takes a large amount of time.

How Changelist Enhances the Backup Time

Changelist is a feature of Dell EMC Isilon/PowerScale that is used to track the changes between two snapshots at a time.

When you run an incremental backup for new clients, the Dell EMC Isilon/PowerScale Changelist feature is used to identify the changes since the last backup operation. As a result, the file scan times are decreased and the backups operations are faster.

With this solution, Commvault provides the following enhancements:

  • Use the Changelist feature in regular backups to get the list of changed files between backups or snapshots.

  • Back up data from the point-in-time (read-only) image of the file system. Backing up from the production file system can lead to issues because users and applications are accessing or changing the data.

Supported Versions

You can use this feature for Dell EMC Isilon/PowerScale OneFS version 8.2.2.0 and later versions.
