VMW0046: Metadata collection fails when backing up Windows 2012 R2 using Windows 2012 R2 proxy (VMware)

Symptom

When backing up a Windows 2012 R2 virtual machine on a Windows 2012 R2 proxy, the backup completes without errors; but the following entry appears in the vsbkp.log file:

Guest size of VM [vm_name] is not available after LVM processing.

As a result, you cannot browse the files for the virtual machine.

Cause

Metadata collection for the virtual machine fails if the backup job is run with granular recovery enabled, but without quiescing the guest file system and applications.

Resolution

  1. From the CommCell Browser, go to Client Computers | virtualization_client | VMware | backup_set.

  2. Right-click the subclient and select Properties.

  3. Click the Backup Options tab.

  4. Select the Quiesce Guest File System and Applications option.

  5. Click OK.

  6. Re-run the backup.
