Installing Operating System Updates on Commvault Flex Open Node Using Command Center

You can install operating system (OS) updates on Commvault Flex Open nodes to keep the environment up to date with the most recent Red Hat updates.

The process does not update any third-party RPMs that were manually installed on the nodes.

Before You Begin

  • Ensure the CommServe and Commvault Flex Open node are running Long-Term Support Release 11.44 or later, with the latest maintenance release. Both must be on the same release.

  • Verify that a smart server group containing Commvault Flex Open node is available.

Note

  • When you upgrade the CommServe to Long-Term Support Release 11.44, a smart server group is automatically created for the Commvault Flex Open storage pool.

  • Before starting the upgrade, verify that the disk usage on the node is below 80%. If disk usage exceeds this threshold, the upgrade will fail.

  • If using a tape library, update the Linux tape driver (lin_tape) when the OS kernel is upgraded.

  • Enable root access on the node.

For instructions, see Restricting Root Access on Commvault Flex Open.

  • If your Commvault Flex Open node uses Fibre Channel (FC) connections, run the following command and resolve any issues reported before proceeding with the upgrade:

    multipath -F

Procedure

Step 1: Verify Remote Cache Configuration

By default, remote cache is created on the node. Verify that it is available:

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Manage > Maintenance.

    The Maintenance page appears.

  2. Click Download/copy software.

The Download/copy software section appears, showing the current feature release, the latest available feature release, and the last job that was run.

  3. Click Schedule Job.

  4. In Remote caches to sync, expand Servers and confirm that one of the nodes in the cluster is listed.

    Note

If there are multiple Commvault Flex Open nodes on a CommServe, each node requires a separate remote cache.

If no node is listed, set up a remote cache on one of the nodes. See Setting Up a Remote Cache on a Client Computer.

  5. Click Cancel to close the dialog box.

Step 2: Download Updates and Populate the Remote Cache

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Manage > Maintenance.

    The Maintenance page appears.

  2. Click Download or copy software.

  3. Click Run job Right arrow.

  4. Select Download software using Internet or Local Copy.

  5. Under Download installation media, select the desired feature release or maintenance release files.

  6. In Operating system options, select the Unix check box, and then select Linux x86_64.

    Note

The latest OS updates are always downloaded, regardless of the selected option.

  7. In Remote caches to sync, select the Commvault Flex Open node with the configured remote cache.

  8. Click Download.

Monitor the job to ensure successful download and synchronization. For details, see Viewing Jobs.

Step 3: Install OS Updates

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Manage > Infrastructure.

    The Infrastructure page appears.

  2. Click the MedaAgents tile.

    The MedaAgents page appears.

  3. For the Commvault Flex Open node that you want to upgrade, click the action button action_button, and then select Upgrade software.

  4. In the Confirm software upgrade dialog box:

    • Select Reboot if required.

    • Select Install operating system updates.

  5. Click Yes.

Monitor the upgrade job to confirm successful installation. See Viewing Jobs.

Note

During installation:

  • The node is rebooted after updates are installed.

  • The upgrade will automatically resume after the reboot. Post-upgrade tasks on this node may take additional time to complete.

Result

OS updates are installed on the Commvault Flex Open node.

What to Do Next

Disable root access on the node. For instructions, see Restricting Root Access on Commvault Flex Open.
