After a VM fails over, you can perform a failback operation to return the failover VM to the original source site or a new source site. A failback operation performs a backup of the failover VM at the destination site and uses that data to replicate the VM back to the source site. If a VM already exists at the source site, the failback operation deletes the source VM and overwrites it with the failover VM.
To back up destination virtual machines after a failover, see Scheduling Backups for Destination VMs after a Failover.
Note
Configuration changes made to a virtual machine at a failover site (such as adding or expanding disks or changing memory and CPU information) are not replicated back to the primary site during a failback operation.
For information about failover and failback operations, see Virtual Machine Failover Status and Failback Status Report.
The transport mode for replication operations is selected automatically based on the environment, and is not configurable.
Before You Begin
To perform failover or failback operations for virtual machines, you must meet the following requirements:
-
The workflow engine must be installed with the CommServe system.
-
Virtual machines included in a failback operation must have a status of Failover Complete or Failback Failed.
Procedure
-
Open the Live Sync Monitor tab from the instance, backup set, or subclient:
-
From the backup set, right-click the backup set and select All Tasks > Live Sync > Monitor.
-
From the subclient, right-click the subclient and select Live Sync > Monitor.
-
-
On the Live Sync Monitor tab, select the rows for one or more virtual machines, right-click and point to Failback.
You can only execute a Failback operation for virtual machines from the same schedule.
The Failback Virtual Machines dialog box appears.
-
Provide the following information:
-
Azure Subscription: Displays the virtualization client for the Azure subscription. Select the Azure subscription client for the restore operation.
-
Proxy Client: Displays the proxy that has been selected for the virtualization client.
During a failback, the proxy that was specified for the original replication schedule performs the backup, and the default proxy specified for the instance or subclient replicates the virtual machine to the primary site.
-
Restore in place: Select this option to fail back to the original location for the primary VM. Clear the option to restore to a different location.
-
VM and Disk: Displays the name of the original primary VM, with any associated disks listed under each VM.
-
Change VM display name to (Destination VM): This column displays the existing name of each destination virtual machine. To change the name of any virtual machine, click in the corresponding row and enter the new name. If the VM display name of the source VM is retained for the replicated VM, select a different destination from the Client list.
If the destination VM name matches the name of an existing virtual machine in the target location, the destination VM is not replaced unless a) it was created in a previous replication operation or b) you use the Unconditionally overwrite VM with the same name option.
-
Resource Group (Azure Resource Manager): Select the resource group in which the converted virtual machine should be created.
-
Storage Account: Select the storage account to be used for all selected virtual machines or disk.
You can specify any storage account within the selected region.
-
Settings: Click Configure to display the Azure Virtual Machine Configuration dialog box.
-
Destination VM: Displays the name of the destination VM.
-
Resource Group: (Azure Resource Manager): Select the resource group in which the converted virtual machine should be created.
-
Storage Account: Select the storage account to be used for all selected virtual machines or disk.
-
VM size: Select a VM size from the list. The VM sizes in the list are those that are available for the resource group or cloud service you selected.
-
Azure Virtual Network Options:
Create Public IP: Select to create a public IP.
Network Interface: Select one of the available network interfaces for the resource group from the list. If no VNet is selected, then the first VNet in the dropdown along with the first (default) subnet that it expands to will be attached to the synced VM.
Note
Static IP addresses from a source VM are not replicated to the destination VM.
Network Security Group (Azure Resource Manger): Select a security group for the destination VMs.
-
Click OK to save the values for the Azure Virtual Machine Configuration dialog box.
-
-
Unconditionally overwrite VM with the same name: Replace an existing virtual machine with the same name in the target location. If the destination VM is currently powered on, the replication operation fails, regardless of the setting for this option.
-
-
Click OK to execute the selected failover scenario.
