Epic EHR Data Protection Solution

The Epic electronic health record system (EHR) is a single-database EHR for the healthcare industry, serving mid-size and large medical groups, hospitals, and integrated healthcare organizations. Epic EHR systems use a central Intersystems Caché database to manage all patient records and transactions, with secondary reporting databases and presentation servers. The Commvault Epic EHR Data Protection Solution uses the IntelliSnap technology to take a point-in-time snapshot of the data volume with the database in a fully quiesced state. The software can then automatically create and mount database clones that are used for testing and reporting without any impact on the InterSystems Caché databases. The Epic EHR Data Protection Solution provides full-system backup and restore capabilities for all remaining servers in the Epic environment in the manner that Epic recommends in the Epic Business Continuity Technical Solutions Guide.

HIPAA

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) has two parts. Title I of HIPAA protects health insurance coverage for workers and their families when they change or lose their jobs. Title II of HIPAA, known as the Administrative Simplification (AS) provisions, requires the establishment of national standards for electronic health care transactions and national identifiers for providers, health insurance plans, and employers. Title II has five rules: the Privacy Rule (45 CFR 164.501, 164.508, 164.512(i)), the Security Rule (45 CFR Part 160 and Part 164, Subparts A and C), the Transactions and Code Sets Rule, the Unique Identifiers Rule, and the Enforcement Rule.
