Enabling Roaming on a Client

Updated

The roaming feature determines the best route for a client to communicate with the CommServe computer. You can enable the roaming feature on a client or client group in the following scenarios:

  • You have clients that constantly change their geographical location, such as laptop clients.

  • The CommServe computer changes its location in the event of a disaster.

When the clients change their location, and based on the type of network routes that you configured, the roaming feature intelligently determines the best connection as follows:

  • For clients that initiate connections to the CommServe computer (one-way direct connection):

    1. The clients try to reach the CommServe computer directly, without the use of network routes (outgoing routes are bypassed).

    2. If the CommServe computer cannot be reached, the clients continue to use the direct tunnel connection that was set up during the one-way direct connection configuration.

  • For clients that connect to the CommServe computer through a proxy:

    1. The clients try to reach the CommServe computer directly, without the use of network routes (outgoing routes are bypassed).

    2. If the CommServe computer cannot be reached, the clients establish a one-way direct route to the CommServe computer.

    3. If a direct route cannot be established, the clients continue to use proxy that was set up during the proxy configuration.

Note

Roaming is also supported for client groups that have been configured with network topologies.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the Client or Client_Group, and then click Properties.

  2. In the properties dialog box, click Network.

  3. On the Network Route Configuration tab of the Network Properties dialog box, click the Options subtab, select the Roaming client check box, and then click OK.

  4. Push the network configuration on the client or client group that you configured. For example:

    1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the Client and then click All Tasks > Push Network Configuration.

    2. When the Warning dialog box appears, click Continue.

A notification appears indicating that the push network operation was successful.

  5. Verify that the client or client group is configured to bypass existing outgoing routes, as follows:

    1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the Client and then click Properties.

    2. In the Client Computer Properties dialog box, click Network.

    3. On the Summary tab of the Network Properties for Client dialog box, the bypassable=1 parameter must be attached to each outgoing route.
