Subclient-Level Indexing

Using Indexing Version 2, an index for an agent can be present either at the subclient level or at the backupset level. Indexing at the subclient level allows the system to better handle the increased scale of data, and to further improve performance.

Note

  • Subclient-level indexing is supported for Windows, Linux, Macintosh, and NAS file systems.

  • Beginning in Feature Release 11.24, subclient-level indexing is enabled by default for newly installed clients.

  • To determine if an index is at the subclient level or at the backupset level, review the following while viewing the Index State report:

    • If you can see the subclient name in the Index State report, then the index is at the subclient level for that agent.

    • If you cannot see the subclient name in the Index State report for any backupset of that agent, then the index is at the backupset level.

If an index is currently at the backupset level, moving the index to a subclient-level index may help with scalability and performance. This is true if one or more of the following conditions are true:

  • The backupset has 5 or more subclients

  • The number of objects backed up in multiple subclients exceeds 10 million

  • The subclient has storage policy retention configured for 5 or more cycles

To move existing clients or a client group to subclient-level indexing, use the Enable Subclient Index workflow. For more information, see Using the Enable Subclient Index Workflow.
