Restoring Full Amazon EC2 Instances In Place

You can restore full Amazon EC2 instances to the original location (in place).

Requirements and Considerations

  • If a passkey is configured for restores, you must have the passkey.

  • When you restore an Amazon VPC, Commvault restores it with the old VPC name.

  • Commvault does not restore Amazon EBS gp3 IOPS values or throughput values. Default values are set by the restore operation. You can modify the default values after the restore is complete. The default IOPS value is 3000. The default throughput value is 125 MB/s.

Start the Restore Wizard

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

    The Overview page appears.

  2. On the VM groups tab, in the row for the VM group that contains the instances that you want to restore, click the action button action_button , and then click Restore.

    The Select restore type page appears.

  3. Click Full instance.

    The Full instance page appears.

  4. Select the instances to restore.

  5. To select a specific MediaAgent and/or source for the restore, in the upper-right area of the page, click the Settings button gear button.

    By default, the Commvault software automatically selects the MediaAgent and source as follows:

    • MediaAgent: The software selects a MediaAgent based on availability and environment.

    • Source: The software searches for the requested data in the primary copy. If the data is not found in the primary copy, the software selects a different copy.

  6. Click Restore.

    The restore wizard appears.

Specify the Restore Destination

  1. For Type, select In place.

  2. For Access node, select Automatic, an access node, or an access node group.

    If you are restoring multiple instances, select Automatic to distribute the workload across the access nodes that are assigned for the destination hypervisor. First, the instances are assigned to the access nodes that are in the same region. The Automatic option is available for full restores from both streaming backups and IntelliSnap backup copies.

    If you select an access node group to restore instances, the Commvault software distributes the workload across the access nodes that are available in the access node group.

  3. Click Next.

    The Virtual Machines page appears.

  • Click Next.

    The Restore Options page appears.

  1. Specify the following settings:

    • Power on VMs after restore: Automatically restart instances after they are restored.

      The power state of the instance does not affect subsequent backups. If the instance is powered on during backups, by default, the instance is powered on again after the restore completes (unless you clear this check box).

    • Unconditionally overwrite if it already exists: Delete an existing instance and replace it with the restored instance.

      When you select Unconditionally overwrite if it already exists for an in-place restore, the Commvault software retains the original UUID for the restored instance instead of re-creating the instance from backup data.

      If an existing instance with the same name exists on the destination host and you do not select Unconditionally overwrite if it already exists, the restore job fails.

    • Notify user on job completion: Receive an email notification that the restore is complete.

    • Under Additional options, for Transport mode, select the mode to use for the restore:

      • Amazon EBS Direct: If you select Amazon EBS Direct, to restrict the scope of AMI selection to specific AMI IDs, you must add an additional setting. For more information, see Enabling Specific AMI IDs for Restores and Replication.

      • Automatic (default): This option selects a mode as follows:

      • AWS VM Import/Export: If you select AWS VM Import/Export method, the Commvault software automatically creates an Amazon S3 bucket for the destination and enables server-side encryption on the bucket. The bucket is named gx-restore-region_name-account_id, where region_name is the name of the AWS region and account_id is the AWS account for the hypervisor.

      • Commvault HotAdd: If you select Commvault HotAdd, you must either enter the guest credentials or have the drivers pre-installed on the instances.

        If you use the HotAdd mode, to restrict the scope of AMI selection to specific AMI IDs, you must add an additional setting. For more information, see Enabling Specific AMI IDs for Restores and Replication.

  2. Click Next.

    The Summary page appears.

Review the Summary and Start the Restore

  1. Review the summary to verify the settings.

  2. Click Submit to start the restore.
