Restoring Guest Files and Folders to the Same Amazon EC2 Instance

You can restore files and folders from a backup of an Amazon EC2 instance to the same instance.

Considerations

  • The Amazon EC2 instance that you restore the files to must meet the requirements for an agentless file recovery destination.

  • If a passkey is configured for restores, you must have the passkey.

  • When you restore Amazon EC2 guest files, the Commvault software automatically creates an Amazon S3 bucket for the destination. The name of the bucket is as follows:

    gx-restore-regionID-accountID

    Where:

    • accountID: The AWS account that is represented by the Amazon EC2 hypervisor

    • regionID: The AWS region that the bucket is created in

For example, the bucket might be named gx-restore-us-east-1-45367689749.

Procedure

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

    The Overview page appears.

  2. On the Virtual machines tab, in the row for the instance that contains the guest files to restore, click the action button action_button, and then click Restore.

The Select restore type page appears.

  3. Click Guest files and folders.

    The Restore page appears.

  4. To select a different MediaAgent or source copy for the restore, or to switch to live browse mode, do the following:

    1. If you intend to switch to live browse mode, in the left column, you must click a folder in order for the Browse from media toggle key to be displayed in the Change source dialog box.

    2. In the upper-right area of the page, click Change source.

The Change source dialog box appears.

    3. To switch to live browse mode (browsing from media), move the Browse from media toggle key to the right.

    4. To select a specific source and/or MediaAgent for the restore, do the following:

      • Restore from copy: Select one of the following:

        • Automatic (default): The software searches for the requested data in the primary copy. If the data is not found in the primary copy, the software selects a secondary or auxiliary copy.

        • Primary: The software searches for the requested data in the primary copy.

        • Snap copy: The software searches for the requested data in the snap copy.

      • MediaAgent: Select the MediaAgent that performed the backup.

For more information, see MediaAgent and Copy Precedence Considerations for Virtualization Restores.

    5. Click OK.

  5. Select the content to restore, and then click Restore.

The Restore options dialog box appears.

  6. On the Select instance tab, in the Instances list, verify that the source instance is selected.

By default, the source instance is selected.

  7. For Access node, leave Automatic (the default value) selected, or select an access node or an access node group.

If you select Automatic, the software performs the restore using the most suitable access node from the destination hypervisor.

If you select an access node group, the software performs the restore using the most suitable access node that is available in the access node group.

For access node selection, the software checks for the same AWS Region. If no Region match is found, then the software uses an available access node from the destination hypervisor or an access node group.

  8. In the Destination path box, enter the folder to restore the data to.

  9. To delete an existing file and replace it with the restored file, move the Unconditionally overwrite if it already exists toggle key to the right.

  10. Click Submit.
