Getting Started with VAST Data Platform

Getting started with backing up VAST Data Platform file server data includes verifying the system requirements, adding the VAST Data Platform file server, and then performing a test backup and restore.

Procedure

  1. Verify that your access node meets the hardware specifications to back up the CIFS shares and NFS exports.

  2. Verify the following about your environment.

    • For CIFS shares using Windows access nodes, meets the system requirements for the Windows access nodes

    • For CIFS shares using Linux access nodes, meets the system requirements for the Linux access nodes

      • The samba-client or smbclient and the cifs-utils packages must be installed on the Linux access nodes if they are used to back up CIFS shares.

        cifs-utils version

        Operating System

What is backed up and restored

        cifs-utils 6.2

        Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.x

        DACL

        cifs-utils 7.0

        Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.x

        DACL and owner

        cifs-utils 7.0

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.x - Kernel 5.11

        DACL, owner, and SACL

    • For NFS exports, meets the system requirements for the Linux access nodes.

You can back up NFS exports through HyperScale X access nodes as well.

    Note

    • For existing HyperScale X clients, Samba client and cifs-utils packages are automatically installed during the update to Commvault Innovation Release 11.42.

    • For new HyperScale X clients, Samba client and cifs-utils packages are automatically included in the Commvault Innovation Release 11.42 media.

  3. If you want to use IntelliSnap for all backups, verify that your environment meets the system requirements.

    Note

    • Snapshot backups of CIFS shares can be performed through Windows access nodes.

    • CIFS shares cannot be backed up through Linux access nodes if Snapshot backups are enabled.

  4. Add the VAST Data Platform file server.

  5. Optional: Enable IntelliSnap backups for the VAST Data Platform subclient.

  6. Perform a test backup and restore.
