Configure Backup Continuity In Case of File Server or Volume/Share Failover

To support backup continuation post a disaster recovery (DR) event or DR drill without requiring FULL baseline backup Commvault supports two configurations for NAS - NFS subclients.

  • The FileSystemAgent/AlternateServerInterface setting defines an ordered list of alternate server interfaces to use when the primary interface in the subclient content is not reachable. Even when an alternate interface is used to mount the share, Commvault continues to register backup data with the original primary interface path.

  • The FileSystemAgent/PrimaryInterfaceOverride setting replaces the primary interface entirely. Commvault does not attempt the original primary interface. This behavior is useful during DR drills when the primary interface is still reachable but should not be used, and in scenarios where only some SVMs or volumes have failed over.

Considerations

When you configure DR for NFS backups on NAS clients, keep the following points in mind:

  • This capability supports full filer failover as well as single SVM or volume failover

  • Failover and fallback occur automatically and do not require involvement from the backup team.

  • Backup browse operations continue to display the original content path, regardless of which interface is used for mounting.

  • Failover is expected to occur between backup jobs. Failover in the middle of backup job may cause stale NFS shares and backup may hang and require manual intervention to restart.

  • Environments using NAS File Share pseudo clients and NetApp replication (for SVMs and volumes) can continue incremental backups after a failover or DR drill when these settings are configured.
