On-demand backups allow content to be specified as an external input when starting a backup. Traditional backups are performed by using subclients, which contain fixed content configured prior to performing the backup operation, whereas on-demand backups allow you to specify content each time you perform a backup.
You cannot use on-demand backup set to perform 1-Touch recovery operations.
Important: After you create an on-demand backup set, you cannot change it to a traditional backup set.
Before You Begin
You must create the following text files to specify where the content is located for on-demand backup sets:

A content file, which is a text file that defines the location of the data that you want to back up.

A directive file, which is a text file that defines where each content file is located. Only one directive file is needed for a single on-demand backup.
Directive file entries must be in the following format:
c:\temp\ContentFile1.txt
Procedure

From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers> client > File System.

Right-click File System, point to All Tasks, and then click New On Demand Backup Set.

In the New Backup Set Name box, type a name (up to 32 characters), and click OK.

Create a directive file defining the locations of each content file.
Caution
When using directive files with on-demand backup sets, if global filters are enabled on the sub-client, both the directive file and its content file must be located in a path that is not filtered or excluded by the global filter configuration. If either file exists within a filtered path, the backup operation cannot process them.

Right-click the subclient and click Backup.
The Backup Options dialog box appears.

In the Select Backup Type area, select Full.

In the Directive File box, click Browse and select the directive file or type the path of the directive file.

In the Job initiation area, define whether the backup job runs immediately or if it will be scheduled.

Optional: To set advanced backup options, click Advanced.

Optional: To run your backup options from a command line interface, click Save As Script.

Click OK.
