Azure SQL Database Managed Instance

You can use the Commvault software to back up and restore databases in an Azure SQL Managed Instance.

Backups

The software utilizes the Microsoft $BACKUP DATABASE mechanism to protect Azure SQL Managed Instance databases. This mechanism only supports taking a COPY_ONLY full backup.

By default, COPY_ONLY backups of system-managed transparent data encrypted (TDE) databases are not supported by Azure; however, you can protect databases with customer-managed TDE keys. For more information, go to the Move a transparent data encryption-protected database section on the Transparent data encryption for SQL Managed Instance page on the Microsoft documentation website.

Alternatively, use the DacFX (Data-tier Application Framework) toolset-based, logical backups for Azure SQL Managed Instance (MI) databases encrypted using service-managed keys. For more information, see Configure Backups for TDE-Encrypted Databases Using Service-Managed Keys.
