Configuring Backups for HPE Morpheus VM Essentials Instances

Configuring backups for your HPE Morpheus VM Essentials instances includes specifying the HPE Morpheus VM Essentials cluster, a backup plan, and the instances to back up.

Important

In multi-tenant HPE Morpheus environments, you can add a tenant hypervisor using the Create tenant hypervisor toggle on the Add Hypervisor screen. The tenant hypervisor inherits access nodes and host details from the master (admin) hypervisor, while using the tenant's own credentials.

Before adding the hypervisor in Command Center, complete the required tenant-level configuration in HPE Morpheus software. For more information, see HPE documentation.

Prerequisites

For tenant hypervisors, at least one Master (admin) hypervisor must already exist. Tenant hypervisors cannot exist independently as they inherit their configuration from the master hypervisor.

Start the Configuration Wizard

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtual machines.

  2. In the upper-right area of the page, click Add hypervisor.

  3. Select HPE Morpheus VM Essentials.

  4. Click Next.

The HPE Morpheus VM Essentials page appears, displaying the Infrastructure page.

  5. Select the MediaAgent that can be used as a Network Gateway.

  6. Click Next.

    The Add hypervisor page appears.

Add Hypervisor Page

Create a master or tenant hypervisor to represent your HPE Morpheus VM Essentials cluster.

  1. Enter the host name (typically, the IP address of your Morpheus appliance server) and a descriptive name for the master hypervisor.

  2. Create or select credentials (username and access token) for a Morpheus admin user account that has permissions to do the following:

    • Access the cluster and resources such as nodes, instances, storage

    • Perform discovery, backup, and restore operations

    Important

To prevent backup interruptions caused by expired tokens, create a Commvault access token with a one-year validity. You can generate and download the token from the HPE Morpheus VM Essentials software UI. For more information, see HPE documentation on user settings.

  3. Create or select access nodes for HPE Morpheus VM Essentials.

To create access nodes, install the access node package on the physical node of the HPE Morpheus VM Essentials cluster as follows. For more information, see System Requirements for HPE Morpheus VM Essentials.

    1. Click the add button.

    2. Click Linux (64-bit) to download the package.

    3. Extract the downloaded package.

    4. Use either the system console or SSH to go to the installer directory.

    5. Run the following command:

      sudo ./cvpkgadd

    6. Select the Virtual Server Agent package.

    7. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

    8. Refresh the page, and then select the access node from the Access nodes list.

  4. Click Next.

  1. To create tenant hypervisor, enable Create tenant hypervisor toggle.

  2. In Hypervisor display name, enter a descriptive name for the tenant hypervisor.

  3. From Master Hypervisor list, select a master hypervisor to associate.

  4. Create or select credentials (username and access token) for a Morpheus tenant user account.

Add VM Group Page

Specify the instances to back up with this first VM group for the hypervisor.

  1. To create rules that auto-discover and select instances to back up, do the following:

    Note

For tenant hypervisors, content browsing is strictly limited to instances. You cannot browse by cloud or cluster.

    1. Click Add, and then select Rules.

The Add rule dialog box appears.

    2. From the list, select the type of rule to create, and then specify the rule:

      • Browse: Select instances. (Selecting this option changes the Add rule dialog box to the Add content dialog box.)

      • Cloud: Select instances based on HPE Morpheus VM Essentials cloud they are in.

      • Cluster: Select instances based on the HPE Morpheus VM Essentials cluster they are in.

      • Instance: Select instances.

      • Instance name or pattern: Select instances based on their names. For example, to select instances that have a name that includes "east", enter Instance machine name or pattern | Contains | east.

      • Label: Select instances based on a label they contain.

      • Tag: Select instances based on a tag and value pair they contain.

    3. Click Save.

  2. To select instances in other ways, do the following:

    1. Click Add, and then select Content.

The Add content dialog box appears.

    2. From the Browse and select VMs list, select one of the following:

      • Instances: Select instances.

      • Clouds: Expand clouds to select instances.

      • Clusters: Expand clusters to select instances.

    3. Click Save.

  3. To see a list of the instances that will be added to the VM group, click Preview.
