Amazon RDS Custom for Oracle

You can use Commvault capabilities to protect Amazon RDS Custom for Oracle. All Oracle versions supported by AWS are supported by Commvault.

You can perform instance backup and recovery using the following methods:

• Amazon RDS native snapshot backups, using an agent on the access node.

• Application-integrated RMAN streaming backups, using an in-guest database agent on your Amazon RDS compute instance. You can achieve granular point-in-time recovery, since the database agents capture database transaction logs and configuration settings. Install the Oracle agent on the corresponding EC2 VM that has the Amazon RDS Custom instance and perform backup and restore operations as you would for a standalone Oracle instance.

RDS Custom automation must be turned off for the following operations. Start automation after the operation is complete.

• Offline backups

• Full restores

Data You Cannot Back Up

You can use a file server agent to back up the following content, which is not included in backups of Oracle databases:

• Operating system data

• Oracle application files

• Oracle server system databases

When You Can Perform Backups

• On a schedule: The server plan that you assign manages scheduled backups

• On demand: You can perform on-demand backups at any time

Restores

Backups You Can Use for Restores

• The most recent backup: For example, restore the most recent backup to its original location

• A backup from a specific date: For example, restore data to a point in time before it became unusable

• Backups from a date range: For example, restore data that was accidentally deleted

Destinations You Can Restore To

• In-place full restore

• In-place partial restore

• In-place table-level restore

• Out-of-place cross-machine restore
