You can restore a full VMware virtual machine out of place using a regular restore operation. If the hypervisor is configured to support vCloud Director, you can restore a virtual machine to vCloud.
Before You Begin
-
If a passkey is configured for restores, you must have the passkey.
-
Ensure that you are using a supported version of VMware vCenter Server. For more information, see "VMware vCenter Server Support" in System Requirements for Virtual Server Agent with VMware.
-
VMware licensing must include a license for vMotion operations.
-
The ESX server that is used to mount the NFS datastore for browse and restore operations must be able to resolve the MediaAgent (which uses 3DFS components to perform the live recovery). To ensure connectivity, create a host file entry for the MediaAgent on the ESX server.
-
The vCenter user account must have permissions set as described in Permissions for Custom User Accounts.
-
If you want to restore data using a specific MediaAgent and/or copy, review the information in MediaAgent and Copy Precedence Considerations for Virtualization Restores.
Procedure
-
From the navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.
The Virtual machines page appears.
-
Click the VM groups tab.
The VM group page appears.
-
On the VM groups tab, in the row for the VM group, click the action button , and then click Restore.
The Select restore type page appears.
-
Select Full virtual machine to restore one or more full virtual machines.
The Restore Options page appears.
-
To choose a different MediaAgent or source copy for the restore, do the following:
-
In the upper-right corner of the page, click Settings.
The Settings dialog box appears.
-
For MediaAgent, decide whether to have the Commvault software automatically select the MediaAgent or to specify a MediaAgent:
-
Automatic: By default, the Commvault software selects the MediaAgent for the restore operation based on availability and environment.
-
To restore data using a specific MediaAgent, from the list, select a MediaAgent.
-
-
For Source, decide whether to have the Commvault software automatically select the copy of backup data or to specify the copy:
-
Automatic: By default, the restore operation searches for the requested data in the primary copy and selects a different copy if the data is not found in the primary copy.
-
To restore from a specific copy of backup data, from the list, select a backup copy.
-
-
Click Save.
-
-
Select the content that you want to restore, and then click Restore.
The Restore options dialog box appears.
-
For Type, select Out of place.
-
Beside Restore as, leave VMware vCenter selected.
By default, the VM is restored to the same type of source hypervisor. If you select a different type of hypervisor, the restore is a VM conversion (cross-hypervisor restore).
-
From the Destination list, select the hypervisor to restore the VM to (the destination).
If a recovery target is defined and you have permission to access the recovery target, you can restore to a recovery target.
To restore to a different vCenter, select Select a different vCenter (optional) from the list, and then enter the IP address of the vCenter or an ESX server.
-
From the Access node list, select the access node or the access node group to use for the restore.
If you are restoring multiple VMs, select Automatic to distribute the VMs in the restore job across the access nodes that are assigned for the VMware destination hypervisor.
VMs are assigned to access nodes using the round-robin method.
The Automatic option is available for full VM restores from streaming backups or IntelliSnap backup copies.
If you select an access node group to restore VMs, the Commvault software distributes the workload (instances or VMs) in the restore job across the access nodes (also called proxies) that are available in the access node group.
-
Configure options for the restored content:
-
VM display name: enter a name for the restored VM.
If you are restoring the VM from VMware to vCloud, enter a new name instead of appending a string to the VM name.
Note
If an existing VM with the same name exists on the destination host and you do not select Overwrite VMs if they already exist, the restore fails.
-
Destination host: To restore to a different host, enter the name or IP address for an ESX server, or click Browse to select an ESX host or cluster.
-
VM storage policy: Select a storage policy to use for the restore.
If you select nothing or Source VM storage policy, then the same VM storage policy associated with the backup is used for the restore.
-
Datastore: To restore to a different data store, select the data store.
Datastores that are incompatible with the selected VM storage policy appear with a warning label.
You can also select the datastore for each disk associated with individual VM.
Click on Disks and in the Select datastore dialog, specify the datastore for each disk and then click OK.
-
Resource pool: To restore to a resource pool, select the resource pool.
The Resource pool list is available only if you are restoring to a vCenter.
-
VM folder path: To restore to a different folder, enter the path to the folder.
-
Network settings: To use different source and destination networks, click the Edit setting button , and in the Edit network settings dialog box, configure the source and destination network, then click OK.
-
Source network: Select the source network, or select Any Network to map all network connections for the source VM to a different network for the restored VM.
-
Destination network: Select a network connection for the restored VM, or select No Connection to restore without a network connection.
-
-
IP address settings: To configure an IP address mapping, click Add, and in the IP address settings dialog box, specify address mappings as described in IP address mapping, then click OK.
-
VM tags: You can select, modify, and delete tags for the restored VM.
If the source VM has tags, those tags are displayed in the VM tags area, and you can modify or delete those tags. You can also browse to select tags to add to the restored VM.
To add the VM tags, click Add:
-
Click the Browse icon to search for all VM tags that are available for the restore.
-
Select the tag and click Add.
-
-
VM custom attributes: You can add, modify, and delete custom attributes for the restored VM.
If the source VM has custom attributes, those custom attributes are displayed in the VM custom attributes area, and you can modify or delete those custom attributes. You can also add new custom attributes. For information about VMware vSphere custom attributes, see the VMware documentation.
To add the VM attribute, click the + icon and provide the attribute name and value.
-
Override VM tags and Override VM custom attributes: To override all tags and custom attributes from the source VM, move the Override VM tags and Override VM custom attributes toggle to the right respectively.
Important
-
The toggle options to override tags and custom attributes are available only on the All VMs tab.
-
For backups that occurred prior to Commvault Platform Release 2023 (11.30), if you add new tags or custom attributes to the restored VMs, the previous tags or custom attributes are removed.
-
You can add tags or custom attributes to all VMs using the All VMs tab or to specific VMs using the specific VM tabs.
-
If you add tags or custom attributes to specific VMs and then view the All VMs tab, the tags or custom attributes that you added to the specific VMs are not preserved.
-
-
-
To automatically start the restored VM, move the Power on VMs after restore toggle key to the right.
-
Under Additional options, specify the following:
-
For Disk provisioning, do the following:
-
To retain the provisioning method that was used at the time of backup, select Original.
-
To specify a different disk provisioning method, select Thick Lazy Zero, Thin, or Thick Eager Zero.
-
-
For Transport mode, do the following:
-
To have the Commvault software automatically select the best transport mode for the environment, select Auto.
-
To specify a specific transport mode, select the transport mode.
-
-
Generate new GUID for VMs: To generate a new GUID for the restored VM, move the toggle key to the right.
-
Reuse existing VM client: To redirect the restored VM client to the source VM, move the toggle key to the right. Enabling this option will map all information, such as Client Name, Host Name, and Client id of the VM client to the source VM.
