Restoring vApp Templates for VMware Cloud Director

You can restore vApp templates to the original location (in place) or to a different location (out of place) on the source hypervisor.

You can select VM templates that are part of a vApp as if they were a regular virtual machine, but the options differ in the procedure below.

Before You Begin

• If a passkey is configured for restores, you must have the passkey.

• If you want to restore data using a specific MediaAgent and/or copy, review the information in MediaAgent and Copy Precedence Considerations for Virtualization Restores.

Procedure

1. From the navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

   The Virtual machines page appears.

2. Click the VM groups tab.

   The VM group page appears. The VM groups area displays summary information for any existing VM groups.

3. On the VM groups tab, in the row for the VM group, click the action button , and then click Restore.

   The Select restore type page appears.

4. Select Full virtual machine to restore one or more vApp templates.

   The Restore page appears.

5. To choose a different MediaAgent or source copy for the restore, do the following:

   1. In the upper-right corner of the page, click Settings.

      The Settings dialog box appears.

   2. For MediaAgent, decide whether to have the Commvault software automatically select the MediaAgent or to specify a MediaAgent:

      • Automatic: By default, the Commvault software selects the MediaAgent for the restore operation based on availability and environment.

      • To restore data using a specific MediaAgent, from the list, select a MediaAgent.

   3. For Source, decide whether to have the Commvault software automatically select the copy of backup data or to specify the copy:

      • Automatic: By default, the restore operation searches for the requested data in the primary copy and selects a different copy if the data is not found in the primary copy.

      • To restore from a specific copy of backup data, from the list, select a backup copy.

   4. Click Save.

6. Select the VM templates that you want to restore, and then click Restore.

   The Restore options dialog box appears.

7. Specify the following options:

   • Type: Select one of the following options:

     • In place: Restore to the original location.

       The Restore will overwrite the source vApp templates with the selected VM templates if the Unconditionally overwrite toggle is selected.

     • Out of place: Restore to a different location.

   • Restore as: To restore to a different virtualization platform, select the target environment from the list.

     By default, the Restore as list shows the source hypervisor.

   • Access node: (Optional) Select the proxy to use for the restore operation.

   • VM display name: Enter the new display name for the VM template.

   • When you are restoring out of place, you can specify the following settings:

     • Organization: Displays the name of the organization for the source VM.

     • Catalog: The field will display available catalogs for the selected VM templates. Choose the catalog you want to restore to.

     • vApp template: The existing vApp template name is displayed for information purposes. Specify a new vApp template name. If the new vApp template name exists, it will be overwritten.

       Caution

       If the field is not changed, the selected VM templates will overwrite the entire existing vApp template. This could result in loss of additional VM templates in the vApp template.

     • Owner: Select or type the name of the user who owns the destination vApp template.

     • Click Network settings to add or modify network mappings for the restore.

       The Network settings area shows the source source and destination networks for the VM being restored.

       Click the pencil icon to edit an existing network mapping.

       Click Add to add a new mapping.

       Source network: Select the source network, or select Any Network to map all network connections for the source VM to a different network for the restored VM.

       Destination network: Select a network connection for the restored VM, or select No Connection to restore without a network connection.

       Click OK to save changes.

   • Power on VMs after restore: No change is necessary in this field.

   • Unconditionally overwrite if it already exists: Delete an existing vApp template and replace it with the restored vApp template.

   • Restore vApp configuration: Restore the vApp template network configuration, lease configuration, and virtual machine startup order of the source VM to the new vApp template.

   • Reuse existing VM client: No change is necessary in this field.

8. Click Submit to run the restore job.
