Upgrading Microsoft SQL Server Editions in CommServe LiveSync Environments

You can upgrade Microsoft SQL Server editions in CommServe LiveSync environments.

Procedure

  1. Upgrade the Microsoft SQL Server edition in the standby CommServe host as follows:

    1. Uninstall the CommServe software. For more information, see Uninstalling the CommServe Software.

    2. Uninstall the currently installed Microsoft SQL Server software. For more information, see Uninstall an existing instance of SQL Server.

    3. Install the latest Long-Term Support (LTS) Commvault or the latest Commvault release on the same hardware or on new hardware. For more information, see Installing Commvault Locally on Windows Computers Using the Download Manager. Then install the standby CommServe host. For more information, see Installing the Standby CommServe Host.

  2. Perform a production failover to the standby CommServe host. For more information, see Planned Failovers.

  3. From the currently active standby CommServe host, temporarily disable the LiveSync Schedule. For more information, see Disabling a Schedule. Alternatively, you can also decrease the frequency of the replication process in the the LiveSync Schedule to allow you to upgrade the production CommServe host.

  4. Uninstall the software in the currently inactive production CommServe host as follows:

    1. Uninstall the packages installed in Instance 2 (or the instance with SQL Server Agent and CommServe Failover packages). For more information, see Uninstall Commvault from Client and MediaAgent Computers.

    2. Uninstall Instance 1 (or the instance with the CommServe server software). For more information, see Uninstalling the CommServe Software.

  5. Reinstall the software in the currently inactive production CommServe host. For more information, see Installing the Standby CommServe Host.

  6. Upgrade the Microsoft SQL Server edition in the currently inactive production CommServe host. For more information, see Upgrading Microsoft SQL Server Editions.

  7. From the currently active standby CommServe host, enable the LiveSync Schedule. (Or reset the replication process to the original frequency, if it was decreased in step 3 above.)

  8. Perform a test failover to the currently inactive production CommServe host. For more information, see Performing Test Failovers.

After a successful test failover, reset the test failover. For more information, see Resetting Test Failovers.

  9. Perform a production failover to the currently inactive production CommServe host. For more information, see Planned Failovers.
