Migrating File Archiver Subclients to Job-Based Retention

Updated

Commvault recommends File Archiver Subclients to use job-based retention instead of object-based retention. The following article outlines the procedure to perform this migration.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > File System > backup_set.

  2. Right-click the subclient for which you want to modify retention options, and then click Properties.

The Subclient Properties dialog box appears.

  3. On the Retention tab, in the Retention Mode list, click Job Based Retention.

  4. Click OK.

    A confirmation box appears.

  5. Type Confirm in the confirmation box, and then click OK.

  6. In the Retain Jobs for n years, n months, and n days box, enter a value for Job-based retention depending on the how long the customer requires to retain the data.

  7. Click OK.

  8. Create separate archive and backup subclients.

    • If the existing subclient has the Only Backup files that qualify for archiving check box selected, you can ignore this step.

    • If the Only Backup files that qualify for archiving check box is not selected on the existing subclient, then use the following procedure:

    • On the Content tab, select the Only Backup files that qualify for archiving check box.

    • Create a backup set only for backing up data.

      1. From the CommCell Console, expand Client Computers > client > File System.

      2. Right-click File System, point to All Tasks, and click Create New Backup Set.

The Create New Backup Set dialog box appears.

      3. In the New Backup Set Name box, type the new backup set name.

      4. In the Storage Policy box, enter a storage policy name that you want to use.

      5. Click OK.

    • Create a subclient with the same content, filters, and exceptions that you used for the existing OnePass subclients in the CommCell Console.

      1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > File System > backup_set.

      2. Right the backup set, point to All Tasks, and then click New Subclient.

The Subclient Properties dialog box appears.

      3. In the Subclient Name box, type a name.

      4. On the Content tab, click Browse to select the directory or file that you want to back up, and then click Add.

      5. Click Advanced.

The Advanced Subclient Properties dialog box appears.

      6. Select the Extend storage policy retention check box.

      7. In the Retention Mode list, click Object-Based Retention and click OK.

        Note

By default, the deleted items are dropped immediately from the backup cycle. Contact the customer to see if they want to set the retention criteria for deleted items.

      8. On the Storage Device tab, in the Storage Policy list, click a storage policy to associate with the subclient.

      9. Assign the new subclient to the same backup schedule as that of the old subclient.
