Subclient Properties (Retention)

Important

Starting from Feature Release 11.22, this topic does not apply to newly created subclients for an archive set. If you upgraded a client from FR 11.21 or an earlier release, you can still see and edit the retention settings for the upgraded subclients.

Use this tab to specify the time period for which you want to retain the items in the storage media. Note that all the options described in this help page may not be available and only the options displayed in the dialog box are applicable to the agent for which the information is being displayed.

Extend storage policy retention

Select this option to extend the subclient retention settings. Once you select this option,

  • You cannot perform Full backups.

  • You can specify archiving rules for your items in the Disk Cleanup tab.

  • The deleted items are retained for the specified number of years.

Job Based Retention

Select this option to determine when the storage policy copy retention must start for the items. Synthetic full backups are not supported as the job based retention approach retains jobs based on the maximum number of days specified at the storage policy level or subclient level.

Retain jobs for n years n months and n days

Storage policy copy days retention applies to backed up items only if it is longer than the job-based retention value. Between storage policy copy retention and archive retention, the file is retained for the longest retention setting.

For more information on retention criteria, see Configuring Retention Criteria.

Retain jobs indefinitely

This is the default option. If you select the Retain jobs indefinitely option, only jobs within the storage policy copy that has a longer retention time are retained indefinitely in the storage media.

Object Based Retention

Select this option to perform synthetic full and incremental backups.

Minimum retention based on file modification time

Select this check box if you want to retain items based on the modification time of the file.

  • Retain objects for X years X months and X days

The storage policy copy retention is applied to the items after X years X months and X days specified.

  • Retain objects indefinitely

The items are retained in the latest backup cycle forever.

Deleted item retention

Determine when the storage policy retention must be applied to the deleted files.

  • Retain objects for X years X months and X days

The storage policy copy retention is applied to the deleted items after X years X months and X days specified. The time period starts from the time an incremental backup is performed on the deleted items. You can restore the deleted items until the deleted items are still retained on the storage media.

  • Retain objects indefinitely

The deleted items are retained in the latest backup cycle forever.

Examples

Select the Minimum retention based on file modification time check box and enter a value in the Deleted item retention area.

Synthetic full backups are allowed. The file is retained for the number of days specified in the Minimum retention based on file modification time box. If the modified time of the file exceeds the number of days you specify in the Retain objects for n years, n days, and n months box, then depending on whether the file is deleted, the file is retained based on the Deleted item retention criteria.

If the file is not deleted, it stays in the storage media indefinitely. If the file is deleted then the file is available in the latest backup cycle for the number of days you specify in the Deleted item retention. After the Deleted item retention time periods ends, the deleted file is retained as defined in the storage policy retention options.

Set the Minimum retention based on file modification time to 1 year and 10 days. Set the Deleted item retention to 3 years and 8 days.

The file is initially retained for 1 year and 10 days after the file was modified. After the Modified Time Based Retention, the file, depending on whether the file is deleted, is retained based on the Deleted item retention criteria.

If the file is not deleted, it stays in the storage media indefinitely. If the file is deleted then the file is carried forward for 3 years and 8 days after which the deleted file is retained as defined in the storage policy retention options.

The Minimum retention based on file modification time check box is not selected and enter a value in the Deleted time based retention area

You can perform synthetic full backup operations and incremental backup operations.

The storage policy copy retention is 10 days and 2 cycles. The Deleted item retention is 30 days.

The stub was deleted on January 10. You run the following backup operations:

An incremental backup operation on January 11

A synthetic full backup operation on January 15

The 30 days for the deleted stub starts on January 11 when the incremental backup was performed. Thus, the deleted stub is retained in the most recent backup cycle until the next synthetic full back up operation after February 9.

After the synthetic full backup operation, the file is dropped from the latest backup cycle and is still available for restore for 10 days and 2 cycles, as specified in the storage policy copy retention options.

File versions

  • Retain objects for X years X months and X days

You can retain the older versions for a specific time. Enter a value for the number of years, months, and days you want to keep the older version of the file. The time period is calculated from the time when the file was last modified.

  • Retain X versions

Select and enter the number of previous file versions to retain after synthetic full backup jobs.

  • Retain versions based on the following rules:

Specify the number of daily, weekly, and/or monthly versions of files that should be included in a synthetic full backup:

    • Retain daily versions for X weeks

Retain daily versions of files for a specific number of weeks.

    • Retain weekly versions for X months

Retain weekly versions of files for a specific number of months (after the number of weeks specified above have transpired).

    • Retain monthly versions for X months

Retain monthly versions of files for a specific number of months (after the number of months specified above have transpired).

      Note

You are not required to enter values for all three retention categories (for example, you can enter a value for Retain daily versions for X weeks, and enter '0' for the other two categories).
