Preventing Cross-Region Backups for an Azure Hypervisor

When you restrict cross-region backups for a hypervisor, the hypervisor's VM groups can include VMs from different regions, so you can use elastic plans to back up VMs from different regions to region-based storage. If you have a multi-region environment, Commvault recommends restricting cross-region backups.

How It Works

Restricting cross-region backups works as follows:

  • Streaming and backup copy multi-region backups: Commvault matches the guest VM’s region with the access node region and the storage region in the plan and distributes the guest VM's jobs to the corresponding storage policy. If the access node, or the storage, or both do not match the guest VM’s region, then the backup fails.
  • IntelliSnap multi-region backups: During IntelliSnap backups, the VM’s region is matched with the storage region in the plan and the VM jobs are distributed accordingly.

Important

If the VM group has VMs from different regions and is associated with a regular plan (that is, a plan that has only one region), then backups fail for all VMs that does not match the region of the storage that is specified in the plan.

Requirements and Recommendations

  • The plan that the VM groups are associated with must have the Multi-region toggle key enabled, with multiple regions specified. For information, see Creating a Server Plan.
  • To avoid having VMs that are in the same VM group retained and pruned according to different settings, make sure that all the region-based backup destinations in the plan have the same retention settings.

For example, suppose you have a plan with 3 regions—US-East, US-Central, US-West—and each of those regions has a primary backup destination and a snap backup destination. In this case, make sure that the retention settings for all 3 primary backup destinations are the same, and the retention settings for all 3 snap backup destinations are the same. - To avoid the potential for cross-region backups, before restricting cross-region backups, verify that all snap backups are backup copied. If some snap backups are not backup copied, those jobs might be performed cross-region, according to the settings for the snap backup. - Verify that access nodes are configured in the regions that are specified in the multi-region plan. - Verify that the workload region is set at the storage level that is used in the plans.

Procedure

  1. From the navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

    The Virtual machines page appears.

  2. On the Hypervisor tab, click the hypervisor.

    The hypervisor page appears.

  3. On the Configuration tab, move the Restrict cross-region backups toggle key to the right.
