Restoring a Mailbox
Browse a backupset and restore a mailbox.
Procedure
-
From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.

Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.
The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

Click View Content.
-
Expand the backup set, and then select a mailbox in the left pane of the Client Browse window.

Click Recover All Selected.
-
Select To Mailbox.
-
In the Destination Client list, select the name of client computer.

Click OK.
Restoring a Message or a Mailbox Item
Browse a backupset and restore a message or a mailbox item, such as a folder, a contact, a calendar entry.
Procedure

From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.

Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.
The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

Click View Content.

Expand the backup_set > mailbox > folder in the left pane of the Client window.

Select a message or a mailbox item from the right pane.

Click Recover All Selected.

In the Destination Client list, select the name of client computer.

Select To Mailbox.

Click OK.
Restoring Messages with an Attachment
Browse a backupset and restore an attachment of a message.
Procedure
-
From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
-
Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.
The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

Click View Content.
-
Expand the backup_set > mailbox > folder in the left pane of the Client window.
-
In the right pane, select the message that contains the required attachment.
For all the messages that have attachments, a paper clip icon appears in the list of messages.

Click Recover All Selected.
-
In the Destination Client list, select the name of client computer.
-
Select To Mailbox.
-
Click OK.
Performing an Out-of Place Restore
By default, OnePass for Exchange Mailbox (Classic) restores data to the client computer from which it originated; this is referred to as an in-place restore. You can also restore the data to another client computer or another folder on the same client.
When you perform an out-of-place restore, the restored data inherits the rights (that is, permissions) of the parent directory.
Restoring to a Different Folder on the Same Client
Restore data to a different folder on the same client from which data is backed up.
Procedure

From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
-
Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.
The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

Click View Content.
-
Expand the backup_set > mailbox > folder in the left pane of the Client window.
-
Select a message or a mailbox item from the right pane.
-
Click Recover All Selected.
The Restore Options for All Selected Items dialog box appears.
-
Select To Mailbox.
-
Clear the Restore to Same Folder check box.
-
Enter the path to the destination folder.
-
Click OK.
Restoring to a Different Client
When you restore data to a different client, the source and destination clients must reside in the same CommCell Console. The destination client must have the agent located on it.

If a mailbox is selected as the out-of-place destination, all the selected messages are restored to the Inbox of that specific mailbox.
-
If a folder is selected as the out-of-place destination, all the selected messages are restored to that specific folder in the mailbox.
Procedure

From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.

Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.
The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

Click View Content.
-
Expand the backup_set > mailbox > folder in the left pane of the Client window.

Select a message or a mailbox item from the right pane.

Click Recover All Selected.
The Restore Options for All Selected Items dialog box appears.

In the Destination Client list, select the name of client computer.

Select To Mailbox.

Click OK.
Restoring from an Archive Mailbox
Browse a backupset and restore an archive mailbox.
Procedure

From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent > backup_set.

Right-click the subclient that contains archived mailboxes, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.
The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

Click View Content.
-
Expand the backup_set > mailbox > folder in the left pane of the Client window.
-
Click Recover All Selected.
-
In the Destination Client list, select the name of client computer.
-
Select To Mailbox.
-
Click OK.
Restoring to a PST File
You can restore a mailbox, a message, or a mailbox item to a PST file.
The size of the PST file is limited based on the version of Microsoft Outlook that you use. For Microsoft Outlook 2007, the PST cannot be larger than 15 GB. For Microsoft Outlook 2010 or later, the PST file cannot be larger than 30 GB. If you try to restore a data set that is larger than the PST size limit, the restore will fail. You can choose to restore large data sets to multiple PST files that are less than or equal to the value that you define. These PST files cannot be larger than 45 GB.
When you browse protected messages, the file size represents the size of the mailbox, folder, or messages. If you restore messages as a PST file, the size of the PST file might be different than the browse size of the messages. Messages stored in a PST file usually take up more space than messages restored as data.
Procedure

From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.

Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.
The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

Click View Content.

In the left pane of the Client Browse window, expand to a mailbox, message, or mailbox item, and then click Recover All Selected.
The Restore Options for All Selected Items dialog box appears.

Select To PST File.
-
Type the path to the location where you want to restore the PST file, including the PST file name with the .pst extension.
If you want to restore the PST file to a network location, type the UNC path to the location, including the PST file name with the .pst extension.
-
If you want to restore a large data set to multiple PST files, select the Limit PST size to (GB) check box, and then enter a size value.
The size limit cannot be greater than 45 GB.
-
If you want to create a single PST file that is common to all users or a separate PST file for each individual user, select the appropriate option in the PST Restore Options section.
-
To create a single PST file, select Create Common PST for all users, and then select either a merged folder hierarchy for all users or a preserved folder hierarchy for each user.
-
To create separate PST files, select Create separate PSTs per user, and then select the appropriate folder naming convention from the corresponding list.
-

Click OK.
Restoring Messages from Deleted Mailboxes or Folders
Restore messages from deleted mailboxes or folders.
Procedure

From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.

Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.
The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

Click the Advanced Options tab.
-
Select the Show Deleted Items check box.
-
Click View Content.
-
Expand the backup_set > mailbox > folder in the left pane of the Client window.
-
Select a message or a mailbox item from the right pane.
-
Click Recover All Selected.
-
In the Destination Client list, select the name of client computer.
-
Select To Mailbox.
-
Click OK.
Restoring Options
The archived mailbox messages can be restored as:
-
Data: This is the default behavior.
-
Stubs: Mailbox messages that were stubbed as part of the backup job are not restubbed during a restore operation. However, you can change this behavior, and restore the messages as stubs in the users' mailboxes.
-
Combination: Backups can contain a combination of both data and stubs. You can restore the data into the format from which it was backed up.
Procedure

From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
-
Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.
The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.
-
Click View Content.
-
Select a mailbox, a message, or a mailbox item from the Client window, and then click Recover All Selected.
-
In the Destination client list, select the client.
-
Click To Mailbox.
-
Click Advanced.
-
On the General tab, select the appropriate restore option.
-
To restore the messages as data, select Restore as Data.
-
To restore the messages as stubs, select Restore as Stubs.
Optional: Select how you want to restore the stubs.
-
If you want the message body to be visible, select Leave message body in the stub.
-
If you want a recall link to be embedded in the message, select Add recall link to stub body.
-
-
To restore the messages into their original format of data or stub, select Restore as Backed up.
-
-
Click OK.
Reviewing Data Selected for Restore
When you select multiple mailboxes, messages and mailbox items from multiple locations, you can review all the data and locations before starting the restore.
Procedure

From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
-
Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.
The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

Click View Content.
-
Select a mailbox, a message, or a mailbox item from the Client window.
-
Click Recover All Selected.
-
In the Destination client list, select the client. The source and destination clients must reside in the same CommCell Console.
The destination client must have the Exchange Mailbox (Classic) Agent located on it.

Select To Mailbox.
-
If you want to restore to a different folder, clear the Restore to Same Folder check box and specify the destination path.
-
Click Advanced.
-
Select the Selected Paths/Filters tab.
-
Click OK.
-
Click OK to start the restore.
Recovering Messages Across Subclients
You can browse and recover data spanning across multiple subclients. Browsing and recovering data across subclients within a backup set allows you to recover data from the mailboxes that have been moved from one subclient to another.
Procedure
-
From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
-
Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.
The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.
-
Select Time Range and select Absolute Time.
-
Select the Time Zone, and enter the Start Date time and the End Date time.
-
Click View Content.
-
Expand the backup_set > mailbox > folder in the left pane of the Client window.
-
Click Recover All Selected.
-
On the General tab, specify the appropriate destination.
-
Click the Job Initiation tab.
-
Select Immediate to run the job immediately.
-
Click OK.
This will restore the data in the specified destination.
Preventing the Restore of Stubs for Moved Mailboxes
If you move a mailbox to a new backup set, and then perform a restore from the new backup set, the stubs from the old backup set are restored as stubs even if the restore option is set to Restore as Data. You can prevent the old stubs in the new backup set from being restored when the Restore as Data option is selected. In this case, only the messages that were backed up in the new backup set are restored as data.
Procedure

From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers.

Right-click the client, and then click Properties.
The Client Computer Properties dialog box appears.

Click Advanced.
The Advanced Client Properties dialog box appears.

Click the Additional Settings tab.

Click Add.
The Add Additional Settings dialog box appears.

In the Name box, type nSkipStubForRestoreAsData.
-
In the Value box, type 1.
-
Click OK.

Restart the services on the client computer.
Using the MassRecall Utility to Recall Messages for an Entire Mailbox
Use the MassRecall utility to recall multiple stubs and replace the stubs with restored messages. For example, the utility can be used to recall stubs that have been moved to a folder other than the original folder, and then restore the messages to the original folder.
Mailbox objects can be recalled to the original mailbox folder from which they were archived (such as the Inbox) or to a different folder within the same mailbox.

MassRecall Utility is not applicable for the Exchange Online mailbox.

MassRecall Utility is applicable to the Exchange Mailbox Agent where stub recalls in Cvrecallmailbox should use the -appguid parameter.For example,

Before You Begin

Run the MassRecall utility on the same client computer where the agent is located.

Use the same Microsoft Outlook profile for the MassRecall utility that you use for the Archiver account.

To use the CvRecallMailbox.exe to recall stubs, you must configure the Exchange Mailbox (Classic) Agent with the same exchange servers that are configured in the Exchange Mailbox Agent.
Listing Stubs Prior to a Recall
Before you run a recall operation using the MassRecall utility, you can list the stubs that exist in a folder or in an entire mailbox.
Procedure

Create an argument file, for example input.txt.
-
Specify the following parameters in the argument file, and then save the file to the local computer.
user1@email.com,inbox\folder1,inbox
Where:

user1@email.com is the SMTP address.
-
inbox\folder1 is the folder for which you want to list the existing stubs. If this parameter is left blank, then all of stubs in the entire mailbox are listed.

Run the MassRecall utility from the same location where the agent is located.

In Windows, on the taskbar, click Start, and then type cmd in the Search box.
The Command Prompt window appears.
-
Navigate to the folder where the agent is located.
-
To list the existing stubs in the mailbox folder, run the following command.

The new output.txt file contains the name of the mailbox folder, the number of stubs, and the size (in bytes) of the original messages that can be recalled in the mailbox folder.

Recalling Messages to the Same Folder in a Mailbox
You can use the MassRecall utility to recall archived messages to the original folder from which they were archived. In this case, all the stubs in the original folder are overwritten.
Procedure

Create an argument file, for example input.txt.

Specify the following parameters in the argument file, and save the file to the local computer.

The port number must be set to 8402 on the nEVMGRCPORT registry key located in \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CommVault Systems\Galaxy\Instance001\Session\ on the target server. You must restart client services after you set the port number to 8402 using the Registry editor.

appguid specifies the GUID that can be retrieved in the following ways:

You must specify the appguid parameter only if you want to recall stubs that were backed up using version 10 or version 11 of the SIMPANA_ONEPASS_FOR_EXCHANGE agent.

Run the below queries from the CommServe database to retrieve the client ID and the APPGUID information.

Admin users must be included in theCommCell user group and must be assigned the Master role.

Recalling Messages to a Different Folder in a Mailbox
You can use the MassRecall utility to recall archived messages to a different folder than the folder from which they were archived.
Procedure

Recalling Legacy Stubs
You can use the MassRecall Utility to recall stubs that were backed up using the version 9 or the version 10 Exchange Mailbox Archiver Agent by using version 11 of either the Exchange Mailbox Agent or OnePass for Exchange Mailbox (Classic). If you deconfigured the older version of the Exchange Mailbox Archiver Agent, then recalling the stubs using version the version 11 agents works as expected. However, if you use only a fresh install of the version 11 agent, you must configure the client where the MassRecall Utility is installed.
In the case of a fresh install, to recall stubs that were backed up using the version 9 Exchange Mailbox Archiver Agent, you must initiate a recall of version 10 stubs first. Recalling the version 10 stubs creates a persistent recovery job. While that job is running, you can then recall the version 9 stubs. If the persistent recovery job completes before you recall the version 9 stubs, you must initiate the version 10 recall again.
By default, the persistent recovery job completes 7 days after the last recall request. Use the nDMRSIDLETIMEOUT additional setting to increase the amount of time that it takes the persistent recovery job to complete.
Procedure
-
Configure the client by doing the following:
-
Log on to the client where you located the agent.
Use the credentials for the Windows account that you defined in the mailbox agent properties.
-
In Windows on the client computer, click Start, and then type regedit in the Search programs and files box.
-
Press Enter.
-
In the Registry Editor, expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > CommVault Systems > Galaxy > Instance001 > Machines > machine_name.
-
Right-click the machine name, click New > Key, and then type MSExchangeDMAgent.
-
Right-click MSExchangeDMAgent, click New > DWORD, and then type nINSTALL.
-
Right-click nINSTALL, type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.

Close the Registry Editor.

On the client where the agent is located, add the nDMRSIDLETIMEOUT additional setting as shown in the following table.

Generating a Stub Detail Report
You can use the CVRecallMailbox tool generate reports on stub details. You can use the -ReportingMode parameter to generate the report with a low level of detail, generate the report with a high level of detail, or generate both types of reports.

Specify the following parameters in the argument file, and save the file to the local computer.

Result
The CVRecallMailbox tool creates the following report files in the specified directory:

Both levels: CompleteStubDetails.csv and HighLevelStubDetails.csv
Scheduling a Restore

From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
-
Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.
The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

Click View Content.
-
Select one or more mailboxes in the left pane.
The mailbox items (for example, calendars, journals, and so on) are selected in the right pane.
-
Click Recover All Selected.
-
Click the Job Initiation tab, and then select Schedule.
-
Click Configure.
-
Select the appropriate scheduling options. For example:
-
Click Weekly.
-
Select the days that you want the run the restore job.
-
Change the Start Time to 9:00 PM.
-
Click OK.
-
Managing Restore Jobs
After you initiate the restore operation, a restore job is generated in the Job Controller. Jobs can be managed in a number of ways. The following sections provide information on the different job management options available:
Restarting Jobs
Jobs that fail to complete successfully are automatically restarted based on the job restartability configuration set in the Control Panel.

Changes made to this configuration will affect all jobs in the entire CommCell.
To configure the job restartability for a specific job, you can modify the retry settings for that job. This will override the setting in the Control Panel. It is also possible to override the default CommServe configuration for individual jobs by configuring retry settings when initiating the job. This configuration, however, will apply only to the specific job.
Note
Backup jobs for this agent are resumed from the point-of-failure.
Configure Job Restartability at the CommServe Level

From the CommCell Console ribbon, click the Home tab, and then click Control Panel.

Under Data, click Job Management.
The Job Management dialog box appears.

Click the Job Restarts tab.

From the Job Type list, select the appropriate item.

Select the Restartable check box to make the job restartable.

In the Max Restarts box, change the maximum number of times the Job Manager will try to restart a job.

In the Restart Interval (Mins) box, change the time interval between attempts for the Job Manager to restart the job.

Click OK.
Configure Job Restartability for an Individual Job

From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent > backup_set.

Right-click the subclient, and then click Backup.
The Backup Options dialog box appears.

Click Advanced.
The Advanced Backup Options dialog box appears.

Click the Job Retry tab

Select the Enable Total Running Time check box, and then specify the maximum elapsed time before a job can be restarted or killed

Select the Kill Running Jobs When Total Running Time Expires check box to kill the job after reaching the maximum elapsed time.

Select the Enable Number Of Retries check box, and then specify the number of retries.

Click OK.
Controlling Jobs
The following controls are available for running jobs in the Job Controller window:
Suspend |
Temporarily stops a job. A suspended job is not terminated; it can be restarted at a later time. |
Resume |
Resumes a job and returns the status to Waiting, Pending, Queued, or Running. The status depends on the availability of resources, the state of the Operation Windows, or the Activity Control setting. |
Kill |
Terminates a job. |
Suspending a Job

From the Job Controller of the CommCell Console, right-click the job and select Suspend.

The job status may change to Suspend Pending for a few moments while the operation completes. The job status then changes to Suspended.
Resuming a Job

From the Job Controller of the CommCell Console, right-click the job and select Resume.

As the Job Manager attempts to restart the job, the job status changes to Waiting, Pending, or Running.
Killing a Job

From the Job Controller of the CommCell Console, right-click the job and select Kill.

Click Yes when the confirmation prompt appears if you are sure you want to kill the job. The job status may change to Kill Pending for a few moments while the operation completes. Once completed, the job status will change to Killed and it will be removed from the Job Controller window after five minutes.

Copy Precedence |
By default, the system retrieves data from the storage policy copy with the lowest copy precedence. If the data was pruned from the primary copy, the system automatically retrieves data from the other copies of the storage policy in the lowest copy precedence to highest copy precedence order. After the data is found, it is retrieved, and no more copies are checked. You can retrieve data from a specific storage policy copy (Synchronous Copy or Selective Copy). If data does not exist in the specified copy, the data retrieve operation fails even if the data exists in another copy of the same storage policy.

Data Path Options |
The data recovery operations use a default library, MediaAgent, drive pool, and drive as the data path. You can use this option to change the data path if the default data path is not available. |

The Restore Job Summary Report provides you with information about all the data recovery jobs that are run in last 24 hours for a specific client and agent.
