Block-Level Backup for UNIX: System Requirements

Verify that your environment meets the system requirements for block-level backup for UNIX.

Operating System

Important

Use the most recent version of the operating system that is listed. The Commvault software fully supports the most recent version of an operating system, until the vendor ends support. More recent versions of the Commvault software might not install on operating systems that are not supported by the vendor anymore. For information about the support lifecycle of an operating system, contact the vendor.

File Systems

All the blocks in a raw or block device are backed up during block-level backups. For supported file systems, only the blocks that contain data are backed up.

Note

Block-level backups are not supported for NFS volumes.

The following table lists the file systems supported for each supported operating system:

Note

  • Live browse and file-level restores are not supported for raw devices.

  • ZFS must span the entire disk. Disk slices are not supported.

  • For the Solaris File System Agent, the CVBF cache must be a UFS file system. For example, /opt/commvault/CVBF/cache.

Volume Managers

  • AIX LVM

  • Linux LVM

  • VxVM

Space Requirements in the LVM Group

  • For Linux LVM snaps, the LVM volume group must have enough space for snapshot creation. The default COW cache size is set to 4096 MB or 5% of the volume size, whichever is greater. To increase the COW cache size, configure the nSnapCowSizeMB additional setting. For instructions about adding the additional setting, see Adding an Additional Setting from the CommCell Console.

  • For CVBF snaps, the COW files are created in the software_install_path/CVBF/cache directory by default. Over time, the COW files can grow significantly and fill up the volume. To move the COW files to another volume, configure the sCVBFSNAPPART additional setting. For instructions about adding the additional setting, see Adding an Additional Setting from the CommCell Console.

Clustering

If clustering is supported by the operating system, you can install the software on a cluster. For information about supported cluster types, see Support for Cluster Configuration.

Location of the Default Temporary Directory for the Commvault Software

For Unix clients, the default temporary directory location /opt/commvault/Base/Temp for the Commvault software must be under the same mount point as the Job Results folder. You can set the default temporary directory for the software by configuring the dGALAXYTEMPDIR registry key on the client computer. For instructions about adding an additional setting from the CommCell Console, see Adding an Additional Setting from the CommCell Console.

Certain third-party software and service releases (together, "Releases") may not be supported by Commvault. You are solely responsible for ensuring Commvault’s products and services are compatible with any such Releases.
