You can use predefined network topologies to configure cascading network gateway connections. The network gateways are configured between CommCell entities, such as the CommServe infrastructure group and client group displayed in the following diagram:
Use this procedure to configure incoming and outgoing connections on the four CommCell entities that are shown in the diagram: Infrastructure group, Network gateway 1, Network gateway 2, and Client group.
Notes
-
Clients connect to the gateway.
-
To address any security concerns regarding the backup network, it is recommended that the network gateway is a standalone computer located in a DMZ.
-
The CommCell entities can be any combination of CommServe server, MediaAgent, and client.
-
Note: See Using a Smart Network Topology When Setting Up Network Connections.
Before You Begin
-
Create the following four client groups to be used in the network gateway topology:
-
An infrastructure group, which will contain the CommServe server and internal MediaAgents.
-
A client group, which will contain all clients.
-
Two network gateway client groups, one that resides near the Infrastructure group and one that resides near the Client group.
-
-
You must have administrative management permissions on the client groups that you plan to use in the network topology instance.
-
If you have clients in your network gateway client group that belong to other client groups that are not designated for network gateway connections, then the network gateway settings on the clients might be lost. To prevent this issue, perform the following steps:
-
Access the network properties of the client, and on the Network Route Configuration tab, select the Configure Network Route Settings check box, click Advanced, and then click OK to the warning message.
-
On the Options tab, select the This computer is in DMZ and will work as a network gateway check box.
-
Procedure
-
From the CommCell Browser, right-click Network Topologies > New Topology.
The Network Topology dialog box is displayed.
-
In the Topology Name box, enter a name for this instance of a network gateway arrangement.
-
Optional: In the Description box, enter a description for this topology.
-
In the Client Type list, choose the type of client that you will include in the topology:
-
Servers: Click if your clients are servers.
-
Laptops: Click if your clients are laptops that need to connect to infrastructure servers.
-
-
For Topology Type, click Cascading Gateways.
-
If Client Type is set to Servers, do the following:
-
In the Servers list, select a client group that will initiate connections to the network gateway group that resides near the Servers group.
-
In the Server gateways list, select the client group that you want to designate as the network gateway group that resides near the Servers group.
-
In the Network gateways list, select the client group that you want to designate as the network gateway group that resides near the Infrastructure machines group.
-
In the Infrastructure machines list, select the client group that will initiate connections to the network gateway group that resides near the Infrastructure machines group.
-
-
If Client Type is set to Laptops, do the following:
-
In the Laptops list, select a laptop group that will initiate connections to the network gateway group that resides near the Laptops group.
-
In the Laptop gateways list, select the client group that you want to designate as the network gateway group that resides near the Laptops group.
-
In the Network gateways list, select the client group that you want to designate as the network gateway group that resides near the Infrastructure machines group.
-
In the Infrastructure machines list, select a client group that will initiate connections to the network gateway group that resides near the Infrastructure machines group.
-
-
To encrypt network traffic, select Encrypt network traffic.
-
Click OK.
What to Do Next
-
Set up the Commvault network gateway that resides near the Infrastructure group.
-
Set up the Commvault network gateway that resides near the Client group.
-
If your clients do not have the Commvault software installed, install the Commvault software on the clients that will be part of the network topology.
During the client installation, configure the client to connect to the CommServe computer through a network gateway. For network settings instructions during the installation, see Installing a Client Using a Cascading Network Gateway Connection.
Note
Make sure to assign the client to the Servers that you defined in the topology.
-
From the CommCell Browser, right-click the network topology that you configured, click Push Network Configuration, and then click OK.
You can configure additional advanced network settings, such as the Default Outgoing Tunnel Protocol option or the Number of Parallel Data Transfer Streams, at the client computer group level. For information about the available settings, see Incoming Ports and Options. For information about accessing the client computer group network settings, see Configuring Network Settings.
