Getting Started with Oracle RAC

Step 1 Before You Begin

See the following sections to learn more about the capabilities and requirements of the Oracle Agent:

Step 2: Install the Oracle Agent

For your computer's operating system, review each of the following topics to get started with the installation.

Install the Oracle Agent on all the nodes of Oracle RAC.

The computer will be added as a client in the CommCell as soon as the installation completes successfully.

For your computer's operating system, review each of the following topics to get started with the installation.

Windows

UNIX

Step 3: Prepare for Your First Backup and Restore

  1. Open the CommCell Console.

  2. Configure a storage device. For more information, see one of the following:

  3. Gather the prerequisite information.

  4. Create an Oracle RAC pseudo-client.

  5. Plan your backup by considering the following configuration items.

    Consideration

    More Information

Decide what data to back up. Oracle database backups contain one or more of the following:

    • Only the entire database

    • Only archive logs

    • The Oracle control file

    • The Oracle SP file

    • Individual datafiles and tablespaces

    • The Oracle Flash Recovery Area

Create subclients for each unique data set.

    Subclients

Decide whether to schedule backups. Scheduling backups has the advantage of ensuring data is automatically backed up at regular intervals. Gather the following information prior to configuring schedules:

    • The schedule name

    • The schedule frequency

    • The schedule start time and start date

    • The schedule exceptions

      Create schedules for the backups.

    Scheduling

Decide whether to encrypt the data for transmission over non-secure networks or storage media. Gather the following information prior to configuring encryption:

    • The encryption type

    • The encryption level (client, instance, subclient)

      Configure the encryption.

    Data Encryption

  6. Configure instances for the Oracle databases.

  7. Configure an online backup subclient.

Step 4: Run Your First Backup and Restore

  1. Perform an online full backup.

  2. Perform an initial restore.

Step 5: Where to Go from Here

  1. If you will be running reports against the Oracle database, configure the Oracle database as an external data source. For more information, see Configuring External Data Sources.

  2. If database administrators are performing backups, complete the following tasks for each administrator:

    1. Configure a CommCell User for each database administrator.

    2. Configure the User Group Permissions for each CommCell Oracle database administrator.

    3. Configure a Storage Policy for backups.

    4. Pass the following information to the database administrator:

      • The CommCell user name and password for the database administrator

      • The storage policy name

  3. To properly plan for rapid recovery of critical data and restoration of business functions in the event of a disaster, review Full System Recovery: Oracle Agent.

  4. Plan to keep all the clients in the Oracle RAC environment at the same Commvault release level for the best operation of the Oracle RAC configuration.
