Hardware Specifications for the CommServe Server

The following hardware requirements are for CommServe servers that are installed on either physical computers or virtual machines, with dedicated resources for the VMs. For more information about system requirements, see System Requirements for CommServe (Windows) and System Requirements for CommServe (Linux). For information on performance tuning and scalability for your CommCell environment, see Best Practices for the CommCell Environment.

The sizing above assumes the following Commvault packages are installed on the CommServe Server:

  • Server: CommServe, MediaAgent, Web Server, CommCell Console, Command Center, Workflow Engine, Metrics Server

  • Microsoft Windows: File System Core, File System, VSS Provider, VSS Hardware Provider

  • Virtualization: Virtual Server

  • Applications: Cloud Apps

  • Tools: High Availability Computing, Storage Accelerator, MongoDB, Message Queue

Note

For more information on the hardware requirements for MediaAgents, the deduplication database (DDB), or access nodes, see the following:

Additional Disk Space for Large and Extra Large Environments

In large and extra large environments, use a separate 100 GB SSD disk space for the following:

  • OS

  • CV Application (binaries)

  • TempDb drive

  • Software cache and log files

Disk Partitioning for Linux

For disk partitioning information for Linux CommServe computers, see "Disk Partitioning" in CommServe Server: System Requirements (Linux).

Definitions

  • Servers are multi-user platforms such as file servers, application servers, hypervisor hosts or Office 365 clients.

  • Laptops are single end-user systems such as laptops or desktops with installed Commvault software.

  • You can have a combination of servers, virtual machines, and laptops in a single CommCell environment. The total workload must equal the maximum number of servers, per CommCell environment type (Extra Large, Large, Medium, or Small). The workload equivalent for each entity is as follows:

    • Server: 1

    • Virtual Machine: 0.5

    • Laptops: 0.2

For example, in a medium size CommCell environment, you can have 250 servers, 250 virtual machines (0.5 * 250 = 125 servers), and 625 laptops (0.2 * 625 = 125 servers), which equals a total of 500 servers (the maximum number of servers allowed in a medium size CommCell environment).
