Media Management Configuration: Auxiliary Copy

Use this dialog box to establish auxiliary copy parameters.

Parameter

Description

Allow auxiliary copy for deduplication database backup jobs

Definition: By default, the DDB Backup jobs are disabled for Auxiliary Copy operation and these jobs:

  • appear as grayed out when viewed from the primary copy.

  • will not appear on the secondary copies (such as Selective Copy, Spool Copy, Inline Copy and so on).

Disabling DDB backup jobs during Auxiliary Copy operation saves the space on the secondary storage and reduce the network bandwidth usage.

This parameter specifies to select or skip the DDB backup jobs during Auxiliary Copy operation. Once disabled, the DDB backup jobs on the primary copy are disabled (grayed) to copy during Auxiliary Copy operation.

Default Value: 0

Range: 0 (does not allow DDB backup jobs to be copied during auxiliary copy operation) or 1 (allows DDB backup jobs to be copied during auxiliary copy operation)

Usage: This parameter is useful to save space on the storage media and to reduce network bandwidth usage.

Allow auxiliary copy of failover live sync jobs

Definition: By default, live sync replication jobs are disabled for auxiliary copy operations. This paramater allows you to run auxiliary copy operations on live sync replication jobs.

Default Value: 0

Range: 0 (does not allow auxiliary copy operation on live sync replication jobs) or 1 (allows auxiliary copy operation on live sync replication jobs )

Usage: This parameter is useful when there is a latency on the secondary site and restore operations are taking longer than auxiliary copy jobs. In such cases, you can run auxiliary copy operations for the live sync replication jobs, and then perform restores from the secondary copy.

Allow multiplexed data to be copied to deduplication enabled storage policy copy

Definition: Specifies to copy multiplexed non-deduplicated data to a deduplicated storage policy copy.

Default Value: 0 (for upgraded CommServe) or 1 (for fresh installation)

Range: 0 (No) or 1 (Yes)

Allow preemption between auxiliary copy jobs

Definition: Specifies that an auxiliary copy job can be preempted by another auxiliary copy job with a higher job priority.

Default Value: 0 (for fresh installation) or 1 ((for upgraded CommServe with the RMAuxCopyInterruptAuxCopy Additional Setting enabled)

Range: 0 (No) or 1 (Yes)

Usage: When this parameter is enabled, you can preempt an auxiliary copy job with another auxiliary copy job, by setting a higher priority for the pre-empting auxiliary copy job. For information on setting job priorities, see Setting the Job Priority for Administration Jobs.

Allow restartability on DDB Reconstruction job

Definition: Specifies that when running a DDB reconstruction job, if the job is suspended and resumed, then it resumes from the point of suspension and not from the beginning.

Note

This configuration parameter is applicable if the Use scalable resource allocation option is not selected on the Auxiliary copy job options dialog box.

Default Value: 1

Range: 0 (No) or 1 (Yes)

Allow user to modify selective copy job selection period start time

Definition: The job selection period for selective copy is based on the copy creation time. Enabling this parameter allows you to modify the selection period for advanced backup frequency criteria (such as for Every <n> cycles/days/weeks/months). Once enabled, the following options are displayed in the Copy Policy tab - Selective Copy Properties dialog box.

  • Prev Period Start Time

  • Current Period Start Time

  • Next Period Start Time

  • Move Job Selection Period Start Time by [ x ]

These options appear after closing and re-opening the CommCell Console. See Modifying the Job Selection Period for the step-by-step procedure.

Default Value: 0

Range: 0 (No) or 1 (Yes)

Auto recopy on error during auxiliary copy job

Definition: Specifies that for Edge solutions, partially completed backup jobs will be automatically selected for recopy during the next auxiliary copy operations.

Default Value: 0

Range: 0 (No) or 1 (Yes)

Copy first full jobs for new subclients on secondary copy with deduplication enabled before copying other data

Definition: Specifies to copy only the first full backup jobs of the subclients during Auxiliary Copy operation.

Default Value: 1

Range: 0 (disabled) or 1 (enabled)

Usage: By default the auxiliary copy is configured to copy first full backup jobs of the subclient. After copying the first full backup, the auxiliary copy can be reinitialized to copy the rest of the backup jobs. However, if you have upgraded from the previous version, then you will have to configure the auxiliary copy to copy first full backup jobs of the subclient. This is useful in the following ways:

  • To reduce the data transfer over the network

  • To reduce the amount of data written size on the disk

This parameter is useful to copy only first full backup jobs of the subclient during Auxiliary copy operation when there is large amount of data to be copied and when:

  • There are no full backup jobs available on the secondary deduplicated copy.

  • There is a new secondary deduplication copy.

  • The deduplication database of the secondary copy is sealed.

DDB Recover and Data Verification job progress update to job manager interval (mins)

Definition: Specifies the time interval at which the MediaAgent updates the progress of the Deduplication database (DDB) recovery and the data verification jobs to the job manager.

Default Value: 15

Range: 0 to 60

Usage: By default, the MediaAgent updates the progress of the Deduplication database (DDB) recovery and the data verification jobs to the job manager every 15 minutes. however, you can modify this time interval be setting the appropriate value for the configuration parameter.

Disable the Chunk Concatenation*

Definition: You can configure the Disable the Chunk Concatenation parameter if you have not explicitly enabled the data multiplexing option on the storage policy copy, but are experiencing slower restores from the secondary copies.

Default Value: 0

Range: 0 (disabled) or 1 (enabled)

Usage: After configuring the parameter, the restores from the secondary copies will be faster. Tip: This configuration is best suited for restores from cloud storage.

Enable to Mark next backup full for data verification failed Sub Clients

Definition: Specifies to convert the next backup job on a subclient to Full backup job if any Data Verification Failed jobs exist for the subclient.

Default Value: 0

Range: 0 (No) or 1 (Yes)

Interval (Hours) between Auxiliary Copy Fallen Behind alerts

Definition: Specifies the interval at which the storage policy will be checked for the following criteria:

  • data to be copied is more than n GB

  • jobs have not been copied in more than n days

(n is set by the user in the Storage Policy Properties (Advanced) dialog box.)

If the defined thresholds have been met, an alert, if configured, will be triggered.

Default Value: 24 hours

Range: 1 to 168 hours

Usage: An Auxiliary Copy operation is usually schedules on a frequent (24 hours) basis to ensure that additional copies of the source data exist when the source data become bad or otherwise unavailable. As Auxiliary Copy operations have a lower priority for resources, there can be situations where the data movement is delayed beyond acceptable limits or has grown to such a size as it may adversely impact other operations. Threshold alert warnings can be configured for these conditions. This settings allows the administrator to set how often these conditions are checked.

Interval (Hours) between Content Index Fallen Behind alerts

Definition: Specifies the interval at which the storage policy will be checked for the Content Index Fallen Behind Alert conditions. If the conditions have been met, an alert, if configured, will be triggered.

Default Value: 24 hours

Range: 1 to 168 hours

Interval (in mins) to allow auxiliary copy reservation request even when backup jobs in waiting state exceeds the limit

Definition: Use this parameter to specify the time interval, within which the streams will be reserved for running auxiliary copy operation.

Note: This parameter is not applicable if you have enabled the Use scalable resource allocation option on the Auxiliary copy job options dialog box.

Default Value: 15

Range: 15 to 9999

Usage: If you have configured the following two parameters, then many auxiliary copy jobs might get stuck in the Waiting/Pending state:

  • Skip auxiliary copy reservation request when backup jobs in waiting state exceeds

  • Skip auxiliary copy reservation request when backup jobs in waiting state exceeds check interval in mins

In this situation, configure the Interval (in mins) to allow auxiliary copy reservation request even when backup jobs in waiting state exceeds the limit parameter. The streams will be reserved for auxiliary copy operation during the time that you specify for this parameter plus 30 minutes.

For example: if you specify 15 (default) minutes as the value for the parameter, then streams will reserve anytime in the interval of (15 + 30) = 45 minutes from the last reservation time for running the auxiliary copy operations.

Interval (in minutes) to retry a failed stream

Definition: Specifies the interval, in number of minutes, to retry a failed data stream for auxiliary copy, offline content indexing or data verification.

Default Value: 15

Range: 1 to 9999

Usage: When source/ target media/drive may experience problems causing streams to fail.

Mark a job bad on encountering corrupt data during auxiliary copy/data verification operation

Definition: During the Auxiliary Copy operation you can skip the invalid jobs and continue to copy the other valid jobs. That is, if any invalid job is encountered on the media during Auxiliary Copy operation, those jobs can be skipped automatically and continue to copy the other jobs. During this process the invalid jobs are marked as bad on the source copy.

Default Value: 0

Range: 0 (disabled) or 1 (enabled)

Usage: Used for automatically flagging jobs with invalid underlying data so that the Auxiliary Copy and Data Verification operation does not fail.

Maximum number of stream retry count

Definition: Specifies the value to retry every stream for failed data chunk before the job is marked as pending.

Default Value: 3 times

Range: 3 to 30

Usage: When Auxiliary Copy operation is performed, data from primary storage is copied to secondary storage through streams. During this process, if one of the job encounters stream failure due to intermittent or no-access to media/volume that is on a shared network path etc., the Auxiliary Copy job may go into pending state. If you want to allow job to retry every stream for failed data chunk before job is marked as pending use this parameter.

Maximum number of threads to be used during DDB Verification Job

Definition: Specifies the number of streams to be used during Verify Data phase for deduplicated data verification job with Verification of Existing Jobs on Disk and Deduplication Database option.

Default Value: 50

Minimum interval in minutes for picking new data for Scalable Resource Auxiliary Copy job

Definition: Specifies the time interval to check for any backup jobs completed during an auxiliary copy operation

Default Value: 45

Range: 15 to 360

Usage: For better performance and efficiency, you can enable the feature to check for any backup jobs completed during an auxiliary copy operation at defined time interval and include them in the replication. To turn on the feature, enable the Pick new data for Scalable Resource Auxiliary Copy job parameter in the current Auxiliary Copy tab.

In this parameter, specify the time interval to check for backup jobs completed during an auxiliary copy operation.

Number of jobs considered for throughput calculation of auxiliary copy fallen behind alert

Definition: Specifies the quantity of jobs to calculate the throughput for Auxiliary Copy fallen behind alert

Default Value: 5

Range: 3 to 100

Usage: The average throughput time is calculated based on the last 5 auxiliary copy jobs run.

Pick new data for Scalable Resource Auxiliary Copy job

Definition: Enable the replication of backup jobs completed during an auxiliary copy operationDefault Value: 1Range: 0 (disabled) or 1 (enabled)Usage: For better performance and efficiency, you can enable the feature to check for any backup jobs that completed during an auxiliary copy operation at the defined time interval and include them in the replication. The backup jobs will be picked up for replication based on the availability of streams needed for copying. The time interval can be configured in the parameter Minimum interval in minutes for picking new data for Scalable Resource Auxiliary Copy job in the current Auxiliary Copy tab.

Note: Auxiliary copy jobs that are run after enabling the parameter will pick new data for replication.

For this feature to work:

  1. Set the value for the additional setting QueueConflictingAuxCopyJobs as 0. For instructions, see Procedure section in Enabling Frequent (Timely) Replication of Backup Jobs Completed during an Auxiliary Copy Operation.

  2. Ensure that the Use Scalable Resource Allocation option is selected in the Auxiliary Copy Job Options window displayed during auxiliary copy execution.

Note: To prevent the Auxiliary copy jobs from picking new data for replication, add the additional setting QueueConflictingAuxCopyJobs and set the value to 1.

Retry Count for Snap AuxCopy

Definition: Specifies the number of attempts to run the auxiliary copy operation in the following scenarios:

  • For a NAS snap job if the source volume is offline during an auxiliary copy job.

  • For a VMware snap job using open replication if the auxiliary copy job fails.

Once the number of attempts exceeds the parameter value and the number of days exceeds the Retry Time Limit for Snap AuxCopy (in Days) value, no further attempt is done and the snap job with secondary copy is marked as “Available with missing snaps”.

Retry Count for Snap AuxCopy and Retry Limit for Snap AuxCopy (in Days) are interdependent and are also affected by the auxiliary copy schedule.

Default Value: 10

Range: 5 to 50

Retry Time Limit for Snap AuxCopy (in Days)

Definition: Specifies the number of days to attempt to run the auxiliary copy operation in the following scenarios:

  • For a NAS snap job if the source volume is offline during an auxiliary copy job.

  • For a VMware snap job using open replication if the auxiliary copy job fails.

Once the number of days exceeds the parameter value and the number of attempts exceeds the Retry Count for Snap AuxCopy value, no further attempt is done and the snap job with secondary copy is marked as “Available with missing snaps”.

Retry Count for Snap AuxCopy and Retry Limit for Snap AuxCopy (in Days) are interdependent and are also affected by the auxiliary copy schedule.

Default Value: 5

Range: 1 to 30

Skip auxiliary copy reservation request when backup jobs in waiting state exceeds

Definition: Specifies the threshold for the number of backup jobs that can be in Waiting state when Auxiliary Copy jobs are running. When the threshold is exceeded, the resource reservation requests of the running Auxiliary Copy jobs are skipped until the number of backup jobs fall below the specified threshold limit.

Note: This parameter is not applicable if you have enabled the Use scalable resource allocation option on the Auxiliary copy job options dialog box.

Default Value: 100 (enabled)

Range: 0 to 10000

Usage: In a large environment, in which many backup jobs are set to Waiting state, use the setting to skip the Auxiliary Copy jobs to reserve resource.

Skip auxiliary copy reservation request when backup jobs in waiting state exceeds check interval in mins

Definition: Specifies the time interval, in minutes, after which the number of Waiting backup jobs are checked and requests for the Auxiliary Copy resource reservation are either sent or ignored.

Note: This parameter is not applicable if you have enabled the Use scalable resource allocation option on the Auxiliary copy job options dialog box.

Default Value: 5 minutes

Range: 1 to 60 minutes

Usage: Use to manage the time interval in which to check the number of Waiting backups, and make or skip Auxiliary Copy resource reservations based on whether it exceeds the threshold set in Skip AuxCopy Reservation request when backup jobs in waiting state exceeds parameter.

Skip jobs on read errors during Auxiliary Copy

Definition: Specifies whether the system will skip the chunks with read errors during an Auxiliary Copy operations.

A value of 0 indicates that the Auxiliary Copy job will fail with the error "Auxiliary Copy job Failed to copy or verify chunk".

A value of 1 indicates that the Auxiliary Copy job will skip the chunk and continue the operation.

Default Value: 1

Range: 0 (disabled) or 1 (enabled)

Usage: Read errors during Auxiliary Copy operation can slow or fail the operation keeping valid data that may exist further along on the media from being copied in a timely manner. Read errors can be caused by dust in the tape drive, track alignment, or unreadable data. This parameter allows the operation to skip the read error and copy all valid data before going back to attempt additional reads. Only after all subsequent read attempts fail the Auxiliary Copy job will fail.

Skip unavailable media

Definition: Specifies whether the auxiliary copy or offline content indexing job skips unavailable media or goes into a wait state.

Default Value: 0

Range: 0 (No) or 1 (Yes)

Usage: Source media required for Auxiliary Copy or Content Indexing operation may be occupied or not in state that would allow automatic access (exported). Default is to wait for this media which is the prudent thing to do, but may cause long waits.

Source signature cache buffer size (in KB)

Definition: Specifies the buffer size for the data that can be held to perform source side deduplication.

Default Value: 4096

Range: 1024 to 7168

Usage: The default buffer size of 4096 KB can hold the data of 32 signatures. The high latency deduplication database reply needs more data to cache to not interrupt the read operation. Use this option to increase the data-buffer cache.

Storage Policy Copy Summary Populate Interval

Definition: Specifies the time interval at which the storage policy will be checked for the following information:

  • jobs to be copied

  • jobs have not been copied since 'n' number of days

    (n is set to 30, 60 and 90 days)

Default Value: 24 hours

Range: 1 to 9999

Usage: For an Auxiliary Copy, this parameter checks the “data to be copied” and “data has not been copied” information to populate the values in the Storage Policy Copy summary.

Time (in minutes) after which job will be preempted on continuous resource reservation failures

Definition: Specifies the time interval, after which job will be prevented if there are any continuous resource reservation failure.

Default Value: 30 minutes

Range: 5 to 360 minutes

Usage: If any job (such as Auxiliary Copy, Content Indexing, Data Verification, Media Refresh & DDB Reconstruction jobs) is facing resource reservation issues constantly for specific amount of time, where it is unable to secure any resources at all to run, the job will be put into pending state. Once the job goes pending, it will be retried by the Job manager based on the job type’s restart interval (see Job Management in Control Panel).

Time-out (in minutes) for aliveness check

Definition: Specifies the time-out interval for Auxiliary Copy process aliveness check.

Default Value: 5

Range: 1 to 9999

Usage: Aliveness checks verify that running jobs are in a consistent state with the necessary communication links available to all necessary components.
