Microsoft Windows

The Windows File System Agent provides unified protection and recovery for file system data residing on Windows clients. It also provides more granular backup and recovery options that operate seamlessly with your data protection needs.

The Windows File System Agent backs up the entire file system, which includes:

  • System State

  • UNC paths

  • Mount points

The Windows File System Agent can be used to backup any Windows Server, such as:

  • Communication Server

  • Cluster Share Volume File System

  • Scale-Out File Server, etc

In addition, the Windows File System Agent provides efficient job-management and reporting to make sure that all of your data is easily manageable, traceable, and retrievable whenever the need arises.

Key Features

The Windows File System Agent offers the following key features:

Simplified Data Management

The Windows File System Agent provides a singular approach for easy management of all the Windows systems in your environment using the same unified console and infrastructure.

Point-in-Time Recovery

In the event of a serious system failure, such as the breakdown of hardware, software, or operating systems, the Windows File System Agent provides point-in-time recovery of files at any given time.

System State

The system state is backed up and restored as part of Windows File System Agent backup and restore as it contains many components and services that are critical to the recovery of the Windows operating system.

Communications Server

The Office Communication Server contains OCS data settings and OCS metadata. To comprehensively backup the communication server, Windows File System Agent must be used to back up the OCS data settings and the SQL Server Agent must be used to back up the OCS metadata.

Uninterrupted Backup and Restore

In the event that a MediaAgent used during a backup or recovery operation fails, the operation will automatically resume on an alternate MediaAgent from the point of failure. This is especially useful for backups and restores of large data. For example, in the event of a network failure, the jobs are automatically resumed using an alternate data path. Similarly, in the event of a device failure, the jobs are automatically switched to an alternate disk or tape drive.

Reports

A variety of reports are automatically provided for managing the File System data. Reports can be accessed from the Web Console, Cloud Services site, or the CommCell Console.

Block-Level Backups

Block-level backups integrate snapshot technology with efficient block storage mechanisms for faster backups. The backups are faster because only the blocks that contain data are backed up, rather than the entire files. For more information, Block-Level Backups.

Add-On Solutions

The following additional components enhance the capabilities of the Windows File System Agent:

1-Touch

1-Touch recovery helps to recover a crashed system in the least amount of time, by automatically rebuilding the operating system. You can also recover systems with defective components such as inaccessible volumes or crashed disks. You don't need to reinstall the individual software packages or operating systems manually.

For more information on this feature, see 1-Touch for Windows.

Virtualize Me

Virtualize Me converts any physical computer into a virtual machine quickly and reliably. Use the backup that is available on the media to create a virtual machine when the physical computer is unavailable because of a hardware or network failure.

For more information about this feature, see Virtualize Me - Windows.

OnePass

OnePass is an integrated File System agent that backs up and archives data which meets the archiving rules that can be established for your environment. OnePass also reclaims backup storage space when files and stubs are deleted on the primary storage.
