Setting Up SCOM Alert Notifications

The Commvault software can send alert notifications from the CommServe database to the Microsoft Systems Center Operations Manager (SCOM). The Microsoft SCOM Server provides a monitoring service for critical applications within an enterprise and sends alerts about events in these applications. An administrator can raise tickets against these alerts and take any necessary action to resolve the problem.

Support: Microsoft SCOM Server 2012, SCOM Server 2012 R2, SCOM Server 2016 and SCOM Server 2019 are supported.

To configure the CommServe database to send SCOM notifications, you must first import the SCOM Management Pack that is built-in with the Commvault software, and then configure SCOM notifications from the Alerts wizard. The SCOM Management Pack enables communication between Commvault and the SCOM software.

Note

SCOM uses a Unicode-encoded file named GalaxyScom.csv, which is automatically created in your software installation directory.

Procedure

Configuring Commvault as an Agent on SCOM Server

  1. To enable communication between the CommServe and the SCOM server, open firewall ports 5723 and 5724.

  2. Add the CommServe as an agent to the SCOM Server from the SCOM Operations Manager console.

For more information on how to add the CommServe as an agent, go to the Microsoft TechNet website, Install Agent on Windows Using the Discovery Wizard.

  3. From the CommCell Console ribbon, click the Home tab, and then click Control Panel.

  4. Click SCOM.

  5. In the SCOM Configuration dialog box, type the fully qualified host name of the SCOM Server.

  6. Type the credentials required to connect to the SCOM Server and click Apply.

    Note

The credentials must be for a user who has administrator rights to the SCOM Server.

  7. Optional: To test the connection to the SCOM server, click Test Configuration.

  8. Click Import Management Pack.

The software imports the required Commvault Operations Manager (for Commvault OEM) management pack that establishes the communication between the CommServe and the SCOM server.

  9. Click OK when the confirmation message appears.

The next time the SCOM Configuration dialog box is opened, the Status field displays the management pack configuration information for the SCOM Server.

Generating SCOM Notifications for Alerts

  1. Create an alert.

  2. On the Notification Type(s) Selection page, click the SCOM tab and select the Select [SCOM] for notification check box.

  3. Review your selections on the Summary page.

  4. Click Finish.

Result

Custom Field Mapping: After SCOM Alerts are configured from the Alerts wizard, they can be viewed from the SCOM Operations Manager Monitor. The alert information is displayed in a tabular format with fields specific to the SCOM Operations Manager software. Application-specific information is included in the table through Custom Field columns. The SCOM software offers up to ten custom field columns to be added, and Commvault uses seven of these custom field columns to display information specific to CommServe database alerts.

The following table maps each custom field to the corresponding CommServe alert field:
