Add an OpenStack hypervisor to support data protection operations for all instances or images hosted or managed by the hypervisor.
Before You Begin
You will need the following information to add a hypervisor:
-
Install the Virtual Server Agent (VSA) on at least one instance (proxy) in the OpenStack data center. You can install the VSA on other instances to create additional VSA proxies for the data center.
-
At least one VSA proxy is needed for each region.
-
Identify the keystone address for the OpenStack node and obtain administrator user credentials. If there are multiple endpoints for the keystone URL, use the public endpoint.
Start the Configuration Wizard
-
From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtual machines.
The Overview page appears.
-
On the Hypervisors tab, click Add hypervisor.
The Add hypervisor page appears.
Add Hypervisor
-
For Keystone Address, enter the fully qualified host name or IP address for the keystone node.
Note
-
If the endpoint uses a port other than 5000 or if the endpoint listening on port 5000 is not configured to authenticate the user, enter the full keystone endpoint URL. The endpoint URL must be able to authenticate the user logon credentials, and can be the public or admin URL.
-
The OpenStack proxy also communicates with the Cinder, Glance, Neutron, and Nova service endpoints. The URL and ports can be listed by running the
openstack endpoint list
command. If there is a firewall, the ports and URLs listed for the Cinder, Glance, Neutron, and Nova services should be allowed access from the proxy.
-
-
For Hypervisor display name, enter a descriptive name for the hypervisor.
-
Enter host or account information as follows:
Note
-
The service account should have an admin role in the project that hosts the VSA proxies, and a member role in the projects that host the source instances.
-
Tenant projects must use member roles, not admin roles.
-
User name: Enter the user name for the keystone node user with administrator privileges.
-
OpenStack Domain (optional): If a domain is configured in the OpenStack environment, enter the domain for the keystone node user.
-
Password: Enter the password for the user account.
-
-
For Credentials, select existing credentials or create new credentials.
Steps to create credentials
-
Click the add button
.
The Add credential dialog box appears.
-
For Credential Vault, select the credential vault to save the credentials in.
-
In Credential name, enter a descriptive name for the credentials.
-
In User account, enter the name of the OpenStack user account.
-
In Password, enter the password for the user account.
-
In Description, enter a description of the credentials.
-
Click Save.
-
-
For Access node, select one or more existing access nodes for the hypervisor, or create a new one. Alternatively, you can manually download Windows or Linux 64-bit Access Node Package and set up authentication yourself.
-
Click the add button
.
The Add a new Access node dialog box appears.
-
Click the package to download for the platform: Linux (64-bit) or Windows (64-bit).
-
-
Click Next.
Add a VM Group
A VM group is a collection of virtual machines that you want to back up using the same settings. You can define the group's content by applying auto-discovery rules or by manually selecting specific VMs, hosts, clusters, or datacenters.
-
Create a VM group using the following steps:
Steps to create a VM group
-
In Name, enter a descriptive name for the VM group.
-
To create rules that auto-discover and select VMs to back up, do the following:
-
Click Add, and then select Rules.
The Add rule dialog box appears.
-
From the list, select the type of rule to create, and then specify the rule:
-
Browse: Select specific VMs. (Selecting this option changes the Add rule dialog box to the Add content dialog box.)
-
Instance: Select instance for the VM you want to back up.
-
Power state: Select VMs based on a power status of On, Off, or Other. (Other includes statuses such as Suspended).
-
Project: Select instances based on the project that they belong to. For example, to select instances in the MyCompany project, enter Project | Equals | MyCompany.
-
Instance name or pattern: Select instances based on their names. For example, to select instances VMs that have a name that includes "east", enter Virtual machine name or pattern | Contains | east.
-
-
Click Save.
-
-
To select VMs in other ways, do the following:
-
Click Add, and then select Content.
The Add content dialog box appears.
-
From the Browse and select VMs list, select one of the following:
Projects: Select a project, region, instance, or image.
Admin: Select images or instances.
-
Click Save.
-
-
-
To see the VMs that are selected for the VM group, click the Preview button.
Add a Plan
-
For Plan, select an existing backup plan or create a new backup plan.
Steps to create a backup plan
-
Click the add button
.
The Add plan dialog box appears.
-
In the Plan name box, enter a descriptive name for the backup plan.
-
For Storage, select the storage pool where you want to store backups.
-
For the backup plan settings, select pre-defined settings or create custom settings:
-
To select pre-defined settings, under Retention rules, select one of the following:
-
Select Standard retention to retain the incremental backups for 1 month.
-
Select Extended retention for optimized storage where the incremental backups of primary and secondary copies are retained for 1 month, and extended retention for monthly and yearly full backups.
Note
The Extended retention option is available only when the secondary copy backup is selected.
-
-
To create custom settings, select Custom plan, and then specify the following:
-
For Snapshot retention, specify the number of snapshots to retain for IntelliSnap backups.
-
For Retention, specify the amount of time to retain the backups.
-
For Retention monthly full (Secondary copy), specify the amount of time to retain the monthly full backup on secondary copy.
-
For Retention yearly full (Secondary copy), specify the amount of time to retain the yearly full backup on secondary copy.
-
For Backups run every, specify how often to run backups.
-
-
-
Click Done.
