Version/firmware

For snapshot backups to function appropriately, the host where the backup takes place must be able to access LUN-masking records and views. For Dell EMC VMAX, you must create a masking view for the host executing the backup or the proxy computer where the snap is mounted. Don't create the masking view using the host group of a cascaded initiator group. For DMX, the masking and mapping record for VCMDB (Volume Control Manager Database) must be accessible on the host executing the backup.

Ports

Open ports 5988 (no SSL) and 5989 (SSL) between the server computers, Backup Gateway$, and client computers.

Software

Install the following software.

By default, all functionality is already enabled in the Dell EMC PowerMax/VMAX3/VMAX/Symmetrix hardware layer. However, a hardware configuration file (IMPL) must be enabled before using the array. Contact an EMC Representative to ensure TimeFinder and Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) functionalities have been properly configured.

Cascade storage group in the array is supported for Dell EMC TimeFinder SnapVX and Dell EMC TimeFinder SnapVX (SYMCLI) engines. The parent storage group of a cascade storage group must be associated to a masking view.

Dell EMC PowerMAX, VMAX All Flash, and VMAX3

  • Dell EMC TimeFinder SnapVX(SYMCLI): Solutions Enabler 10.0.0.5, 9.x on client and access node computers or on Remote MA.

  • Dell EMC TimeFinder SnapVX: Solutions Enabler 9.x on the SMI-S server

  • TimeFinder VP Snap and TimeFinder Clone engines: Solutions Enabler 9.x on client and access nodes or on Remote MA and Solution enabler 9.x on SMI-S server.

Dell EMC VMAX

Client Components (SYMCLI) are required only during the initial one-time configuration. Base Components (with SYMAPI) are required for all snapshot operations. SYMCLI and SYMAPI do not need to be installed on source host when the Remote MA is configured. If EMC Solutions Enabler installer is not available for a specific 32 bit platform, Commvault Cloud supports the Remote MA installed on a different platform.

  • Dell EMC TimeFinder SnapVX(SYMCLI): Solutions Enabler 10.0.0.5, 9.x on client and proxy computers or on Remote MA.

  • Dell EMC TimeFinder SnapVX: Solutions Enabler 9.x or 8.x on the SMI-S server.

  • Dell EMC TimeFinder VP Snap, TimeFinder Snap, TimeFinder Clone and TimeFinder BCV engines: Solutions Enabler 9.x, 8.x or 7.6.2.8 on client and proxy computers.

Dell EMC Symmetrix

  • Solutions Enabler 6.4 or later on client and access nodes.

  • Client Components (SYMCLI) are required only during the initial one-time configuration. Base Components (with SYMAPI) are required for all snap operations.

  • SYMCLI and SYMAPI do not need to be installed on source host when Remote MA is configured for VMAX.

Snapshot names

Configuration

  • Configuration: Default

  • Naming convention: SP_2_JobID_SnapID

    • SP_2: Constant value

    • Job ID: A unique ID assigned to each snapshot backup by the Commvault Cloud software.

    • SnapID: The snapshot ID created by the Commvault Cloud software.

  • Example: SP_2_114038_6641
