Periodic Replication Options for Hyper-V

When you configure a replication group for a Hyper-V destination, identify source VMs, and then provide Hyper-V specific values for replication to the destination site.

You can replicate to Hyper-V from VMware source or Hyper-V source.

Select Replication Type

Select Periodic replication to create new backups and replicate virtual machines to the recovery target hypervisor. The periodic replication method involves taking and cleaning up snapshots frequently on the source VM and requires less bandwidth.

Production Site and Recovery Site Hypervisor Vendors

  • Production site hypervisor vendor: Select the vendor for production site hypervisor.

  • Recovery site hypervisor vendor: Select the vendor for recovery site hypervisor.

General

  • Replication group name: Enter a descriptive name for the replication group, or change the name.

  • Production site hypervisor: Select the hypervisor for the source VMs, and then, from the list of VMs, select the VMs to replicate.

When you edit an existing replication group, you cannot change this value.

Content

You must add virtual machines that you want to replicate and failover during disaster.

  • Add: Click Add virtual machines, and then select the virtual machines from the VM group that you want to include in the replication group. You can automatically update and sync when VMs are added or removed from the VM group.

Storage

  • Primary copy: Select the primary copy for replication.

To replicate a VM using a secondary copy, click Add copy. To add a secondary copy, beside Secondary copy, click the Add button add/plus button - gray - no border, and then select the storage type.

  • Copy for replication: Select the storage copy for replication.

Recovery Options

  • Target: Select a previously defined recovery target.

To create a new recovery target, click the Add button add/plus button - gray - no border.

When you edit an existing replication group, you cannot change this value.

  • Recovery point objective (RPO)

  • Replication runs every: Enter how frequently you want to run a replication operation, such as once every 4 Hours or 2 Days. The default frequency is four hours.

  • Period: Enter the time period for replication frequency.

  • Recovery time objective (RTO)

    • Warm site replication: Select this option to create a destination VM only during a failover.
  • Enable replication immediately after group creation: To disable replication (recovery) operations after the creation of this replication group, move this toggle key to the left.

Override Options (Optional)

To change the destination settings for specific VMs, in the row for the VM , click the Actions button action_button, and then select Override replication options.

You can only change options for one VM at a time.

On the Override replication options dialog box, you can enter the following information:

  • VM display name: Enter the display name for the destination VM.

You can only change this value when adding a new VM or if the replication group is a warm site.

  • Restore location: Select the restore location on the destination VM.

  • Destination folder: To replicate to a folder, click Browse and select the destination folder.

You can change this value only when adding a new VM or if a replication group is a warm site.

  • Register virtual machine with failover cluster: Select this option to register replicated virtual machines to the failover cluster for the destination client.

Virtual machines in a failover cluster can migrate to another Hyper-V server.

To register virtual machines with the failover cluster, the user account for the virtualization client must be part of the Hyper-V Administrators group.

For a Hyper-V cluster, the user account must have full Cluster Permissions (Read and Full Control).

    • Network adaptor: Select a network interface.

Advanced options (Optional)

  • Validate destination VM (Power ON and OFF): To verify that the destination VM is bootable by powering it on and then powering off, enable this toggle key. Changes resulting from the power on are not preserved. If guest tools are not installed on the source VM, validation is skipped even when this option is selected.

If validation fails, the destination virtual machine reverts back to its last valid (bootable) state.

  • Unconditionally overwrite if VM already exists: To make the first replication operation replace an existing virtual machine with the same name in the target location, even if the destination VM is running, enable this toggle key.

Replication operations for incremental changes are not affected by this setting. Incremental replication changes are applied to the destination VM without overwriting the VM. If the destination VM is currently running, the replication fails.

  • Continue to next priority on failure: When a VM cannot be included in the replication operation and you want to continue to next priority upon failure, enable this toggle key.

  • Failover delay between different priority machines (in mins): Specify how long the replication operation should wait between processing VMs that are assigned different priorities. This setting can be used to enable higher priority machines to start before processing the next set of machines.

  • Disk Provisioning: Select the disk provisioning type for the destination VM: Auto, Dynamic, Fixed.

When configuring a domain controller VM for replication, select Fixed.

When you edit an existing replication group, you cannot change this value.

Summary

The Summary tab displays the settings that you configured on each tab for this replication group.
