Restoring an Entire Gmail Mailbox to a Google Cloud Storage Account

You can restore a Gmail mailbox directly to a Google Cloud Storage account. This option is ideal for large restores, as it keeps data transfer within the cloud and helps avoid high egress costs.

Start the Configuration Wizard

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Google Workspace.

    The Google Workspace Overview page appears.

  2. On the Apps tab, click the Gmail app.

    The Overview page of the app appears.

  3. On the Mailboxes tab, select the mailboxes that you want to restore.

  4. Click Restore > Restore mailbox.

    The Destination page of the Restore Options configuration wizard appears.

Destination

  1. On the Destination tab, select Google Cloud Storage.

  2. From the Google Cloud Storage Service Account list, select a saved credential or create a new credential.

    Steps to create a new service account credential
    1. Click + beside the Credential list.

      The Add credential dialog box appears.

    2. Enter the following information:

      • From the Account type list, verify that Cloud Account is selected.

      • From the Vendor type list, verify that Google Cloud is selected.

      • From the Authentication, select Service Account.

      • In Credential Vault, select Built-in or the default type for the credentials.

      • For Credential name, enter a descriptive name for the credentials.

      • In the Service Account ID box, enter the Google Cloud Service Account ID.

      • For Private key file, click Upload to choose the JSON key file.

      • In Description, enter a description of the credentials.

    3. Click Save.

  3. Select a File type.

    The supported formats are EML and MBOX.

  4. From the Bucket name list, select the Google Cloud Storage bucket to which you want to restore the mailbox.

  5. Click Next.

    The Options page of the configuration wizard appears.

Options

  1. To include deleted items in the restore, select Include deleted items.

  2. To exclude mail, contacts, or calendars from the restore, deselect any of the following options as required:

    • Restore mail

    • Restore contacts

    • Restore calendars

  3. Click Next.

    The Review page of the configuration wizard appears.

Review

  1. Review the items selected for the restore.

  2. Click Submit to start the restore operation.

    The Summary page appears.

Summary

  1. The Summary page displays the restore job details.

  2. Click Close.
