Application Aware, Quiesced and Crash Consistent Backups

When performing IntelliSnap backups using the Virtual Server Agent (VSA), you can choose one of the following options to ensure application and data consistency:

  • Perform an application-aware backup for virtual machines that run applications. For more information, see Application Aware Backups.

  • Quiesce the file system and applications, using VMware Tools on guest virtual machines to pause activity while a hardware snapshot is created.

  • Perform a crash consistent backup.

You can restore a virtual machine from a VSA backup, including all applications running on the virtual machine. To back up and restore specific databases, use an application agent.

Database Log Truncation

Logs are truncated only when an application aware backup is performed.

  • Microsoft Exchange and Oracle database logs are automatically truncated as part of the backup process.

  • For Microsoft SQL Server, an automatic log backup schedule is created automatically after you run an agent assisted application backup successfully for the first time.

Note

You can also create an automatic log backup schedule for Oracle to retain copies of database logs, but backups of Oracle logs are not required to ensure the application consistency of backups.
