Attaching a Volume to an Existing OpenStack Instance

When performing a restore from a backup of an OpenStack instance, you can choose to restore a volume and attach it to a different, existing instance.

By attaching a volume to an existing instance, you can access or reuse the data on the volume without restoring the full source instance.

This feature is useful in the following scenarios:

• An instance has multiple volumes, but you want to restore only some of the volumes.

• You want to copy and add volumes from one instance to another instance.

• You want to quickly restore a volume and access the data on the volume.

Considerations

Note: You can attach a volume to an existing instance and perform cinder volume restore operations only for cinder volumes, not for images. If you select an image for a restore operation that attaches a volume to a different, existing instance or if you perform a cinder volume restore operation on an image, the job might fail.

Procedure

1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > virtualization_client > Virtual Server > OpenStack.

2. Initiate the restore from a subclient or backup set:

   • From a subclient: Right-click the subclient and select Browse and Restore.

   • From a backup set: Right-click the backup set, point to All Tasks, and click Browse and Restore.

3. In the Browse and Restore Options dialog box, select Attach Volume to Existing Instance, and then click View Content.

4. From the list of backed up instances, select one or more instances or volumes to be restored.

   When you click on an instance, by default, all associated volumes are selected for restore. To restore all volumes for that instance, leave the default selections for the instance in the right pane. To restore selected volumes, clear the selections in the right pane for volumes that should not be restored. If you do not select an instance, you can select the desired volumes in the right pane.

5. Click Recover All Selected.

   The Restore Volume wizard launches and displays the Destination page.

6. Specify the destination and the proxy to be used for the restore.

   Virtualization Client: To restore to a different OpenStack keystone node, select the virtualization client from the list.

   Destination Client: If a VSA proxy was designated at the subclient of the source instance, it will be displayed as the default proxy for the restore. If it was not set, then the first proxy in the client list will be displayed as the default proxy for the restore. If you change this value, you must select a proxy client that resides on the destination client.

7. Click Next.

   The wizard displays the Volumes page.

8. Specify parameters for the restore:

   • Volumes: This column shows information for the source instance. You can expand an instance to view volumes.

   • Restore to Existing Instance: Click in the first row of Restore to Existing Instance column, and then click the browse button (...) to select the target instance.

   • Change Disk name to: Enter the new display name for the volume. (This is an optional setting.)

   • Availability Zone: Click in the row for the volume to select the zone.

   • Volume type: Select a volume type that is defined for the zone of the destination volumes.

     If the volume type was not explicitly set during the instance creation, and therefore, set to default, then, during the attach volume restore, you might need to explicitly select a volume type.

9. Click Next.

   The wizard displays the Job Options page.

10. Run the job immediately or configure a schedule for the restore. Click Next.

    The wizard displays a Summary page for the restore.

11. Click Finish to submit the restore job.
