Locking Retention and Deletions with WORM Storage Lock

Write once read many (WORM) describes a data storage media in which information, once written, cannot be modified. It ensures the highest level of integrity and data security by eliminating the risk of important data from being deleted or modified.

Commvault provides the WORM feature that prevents the accidental deletion of data that is not qualified for aging.

You can use the WORM storage lock option for both deduplicated and non-deduplicated data in both disk and cloud environments. For cloud service providers that support object-level retention, the Commvault software uses object-level locking. For other cloud service providers, Commvault uses bucket-level or container-level locking.

The expiration date for the read-only lock is set to match the data retention time established in the storage policy copies. These jobs cannot be modified or deleted by any user or application until the specified retention date. Once the retention expires, the system deletes the jobs as part of data aging.

To enable WORM storage lock, use a workflow that automatically configures all required settings for WORM storage. For more information, see Configuring WORM Storage Mode on Cloud Storage.
