Monitoring the Deduplication Database

Use the Deduplication Database (DDB) summary to monitor the following areas:

The space that is consumed by each partition
Daily deduplication statistics, such as the number of unique and secondary blocks that are written to the DDB within a specific range of time, and the number of blocks that are ready to be pruned

Note: Disk space is consumed every time new secondary block is added to refer to a unique block.

Backup activity and data growth across all partitions of the DDB

About This Task

The Deduplication Database summary includes the following:

Properties

Options	Description
Deduplication Engine Name	The name of the DDB
Creation Time	The date and the time that the DDB was created
Version	The version of the DDB The version number appears only when there are jobs run against the storage policy copy that hosts the DDB.
Baseline Size	The estimated size that is required on the disk for backup data when the existing DDB is sealed. The software calculates the baseline size as follows: 120% of the size of the most recent full jobs of all subclients.
Number of Partitions	The number of partitions that are configured on this DDB
Total Application Size	The size of the backed up data before deduplication. This size does not include the size of backup data in running backup operations.
Total Data Size on Disk	The amount of deduplicated data that is written on the disk.
Deduplication Savings	The percentage of savings after deduplication
Total number of unique blocks	The number and percentage of unique blocks that are managed by the DDB
Number of Pending Prunable Records	The number of job records (or data chunks) that are aged but not completely pruned from the disk. Each backup job can be 1 or more chunks. When the number of aged job records reach the threshold that is 10,000 or more, then an event message is displayed in the Event Viewer window. The event message signifies that the space reclamation of aged data on a disk is falling behind or slow. See KB Article DD0054 for more information.
Number of Jobs	The total number of jobs that ran against the storage policy copy that is associated with the DDB
Average Q&I time across Partitions in last 3 days	The number and percentage of the average query and insertion (Q&I) time in micro seconds for the past 3 days across the DDB. When you disable horizontal scaling of deduplication databases, the system displays alerts when specific conditions are met: The threshold value of the average Q&I time is 2000 microseconds. When the average Q&I time for the past 3 days of a DDB reaches 70% or 90% of the threshold, an event message marked with Major and Critical severity is displayed in the Event Viewer window. See KB Article DD0005 for more information. For subclient association, when the average Q&I time across partitions in the last 3 days of a DDB partition reaches 70% of the threshold, an event message marked with Critical severity is displayed. See KB Article DD0006 for more information. The average Q&I time for the past 3 days is calculated as the 3-day median Q&I time value. When fewer Q&I are operations performed on a DDB, the value for the Average Q&I time across Partitions in last 3 days parameter might appear as zero. This zero value for Q&I time indicates that there is not enough activity by the DDB to properly determine the DDB performance.
Average Q&I Time across Partitions in last 14 days	The number and percentage of the average query and insertion (Q&I) time in micro seconds for the past 14 days across DDB partitions The threshold value of the average Q&I time is 2000 microseconds. When you disable horizontal scaling of deduplication databases and the average Q&I time for the past 14 days of a DDB reaches 80% of the threshold, you cannot add new subclients to the storage policy that uses the DDB. See KB Article DD0006 for more information. The average Q&I time for the past 14 days is calculated as the 14-day median Q&I time value. When fewer Q&I operations are performed on a DDB, the value for Average Q&I Time across Partitions in last 14 days parameter might appear as zero. This zero value for Q&I time indicates that there is not enough activity by the DDB to properly determine the DDB performance.
Free Space (GB) On Library	The amount of free space available on the library that is associated with the storage policy copy
Pruning Status	The status of the physical pruning for the DDB

Charts

The Charts contain the following information:

The DDB Statistics graph displays daily statistical details of the DDB, such as the number of unique and secondary blocks that are written to DDB and the number of blocks that are ready to be pruned. This graph helps you to monitor backup, pruning activity, and data growth across all partitions of the DDB.
The DDB Size graph displays the amount of space that is used and the free space that is available on the DDB disk or volume.
The Deduplication Savings by DDB graph displays the amount of deduplication savings.

Partitions Table

The Partitions table displays the number of partitions that are configured on this DDB, the name of the MediaAgent, the partitions path, the average query and the insertion time, the size of the DDB path, the number of unique blocks that are managed by the partition, the free space available on the partition disk, the last DDB backup time, the DDB backup job iD, and the status of the partition.

DDB Statistics (Across Partitions) Table

The DDB Statistics (Across Partitions) Table displays the number of unique and secondary blocks that are managed by all partitions of the DDB, and the number of blocks that are ready to be pruned.

Procedure

From the CommCell Browser, expand Storage Resources>Deduplication Engines>storage_policy_copy.
Select deduplication_database.

A tab for the summary opens in the CommCell Console.
In the DDB Statistics chart, do the following:
- Expand Chart Options, and then select the value from the For Last Days list box to view the statistics of the DDB for a specific time range.
- Expand Display Options, and then select the option that you want to display in the graph.
