Reference Copy - Best Practices

MediaAgents

The following best practices are recommended for the MediaAgent used with reference copy clients:

  • Have dedicated MediaAgents for reference copy clients.

  • Use disk media as source and destination, the use of tape media is not recommended.

Load Balancing and Associations

To load balance your data, we recommend having multiple backupsets, subject to these considerations:

  • Under each backupset, you may have multiple subclients. Depending on the content of the source subclients, you can have:

    • Approximately 5 to 10 source subclients for each reference copy subclient (for Exchange mailbox)

    • Approximately 10 to 15 source subclients for each reference copy subclient (for file system)

  • Subclient associations depend on the number of objects within each source subclient. Make sure to consider the size of the source subclient when associating objects for reference copy. One reference copy subclient can hold no more than 25 million objects.

Know What Gets Backed Up

Knowing what gets backed up is the key to success. Make sure the following are set up correctly before running the reference copy job:

  • From Time and To Time of the source job

  • Filters applied to the content of the source subclient

  • Associations with clients and client groups

  • Client side deduplication enabled on the storage policy copy

  • DASH Full enabled on the storage policy copy

  • Load balancing of data has been considered
