Requirements for Detaching an EBS Volume After HotAdd Backups and Restores

Applies to: Full EBS volume recovery, full EC2 instance recovery, VM Conversion to Amazon Web Services, and Live Sync to Amazon Web Services (full instance).

HotAdd backups are performed by mounting a temporary EBS volume to an access node to read or write data (during backups and restores). This process requires the ability to use the Microsoft Windows Plug and Play subsystem to eject/detach volumes after the backup or restore operations complete. Review the following considerations for successful eject/detach of volumes:

  • Any utility that prevents detachment of the disk after a backup or a restore operation results in a backup failure.

  • Disable anti-virus applications that automatically open disks and monitor the disk activity.

  • Disable the Microsoft logical disk performance counters by running thediskperf -N command on the access node (if previously enabled).

  • Consider using the Microsoft perfmon utility to replace the use of diskperf command. Th perfmon utility does not interfere with detaching of volumes after a backup operation.

  • If a backup operation fails to detach a volume, use the Handle.exe utility (from Microsoft sysinternals) to observe which process or processes are holding the volume from unmounting.
