Restoring an Exchange Database Out of Place to a Storage Group or Database

Applies to: Exchange 2007 or later, and IntelliSnap

You can restore the database to a different storage group database on the same Exchange server, or to a different Exchange server that has the same version of Exchange and that is within the same Exchange organization.

The other database can be a Recovery Storage Group (Exchange 2007) or a Recovery Database (Exchange 2010 or later) when you meet the following conditions:

  • The logical information about the storage group or database and the associated mailboxes in Active Directory is intact.

  • You want to recover data from a single mailbox, a single database, or a group of databases that are in a single storage group or database.

For example, you can recover mailbox items that were deleted from a user's mailbox.

Before You Begin

  • If you use Exchange 2007, the backup must be VSS-enabled. If you use Exchange 2010 or later, the backup is VSS-enabled by default.

  • Make sure that the database that you want to restore is dismounted and marked for overwrite.

  • Make sure that the Storage Group or the Database name uses ASCII characters only and does not contain the plus (+) character.
