Restoring Full Virtual Machines for VMware Cloud Director

You can restore one or more virtual machines (VMs) at a time. Virtual machines can be restored in place (overwriting the source VMs) or out of place (with a different name, or to a different destination on the source hypervisor).

Note

Commvault does not support restoring a VM to an automatically created vapp, that is, a vapp that is part of a standalone VM. Standalone VMs in VMWare Cloud Director can be restored to an existing vapp or to a new vapp.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > virtualization_client > Virtual Server > VMware Cloud Director > backup_set.

  2. Initiate the restore from a subclient or backup set:

    • From a subclient: Right-click the subclient, and then click Browse and Restore.

    • From a backup set: Right-click the backup set, point to All Tasks, and then click Browse and Restore.

The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

  3. Ensure that Full Virtual Machine is selected.

  4. Optional: To restore a VMware Cloud Director VM to vCenter, from the Restore as list, select VMware vCenter.

  5. Click View Content.

  6. From the list of backed up virtual machines in the Client tab, select one or more virtual machines to be restored, and then click Recover All Selected.

The Restore VM wizard launches and displays the Destination page.

  7. Specify the destination and the proxy to be used for the restore:

By default, VMs are restored in place to the original location for the source VM, and the restore is performed using the preferred VSA proxy for the virtualization client.

    • In Place: To restore virtual machines out of place, clear this check box.

    • VMware Cloud Director Client: Displays the source virtualization client. You cannot change this value.

The Instance Details area shows the host and user for the client.

    • Proxy Client: To use a different proxy for the restore, select the proxy from this list.

  8. Click Next.

The wizard displays the Virtual Machines page. The VM and Disks column shows the source virtual machines with disks underneath each virtual machine.

  9. For an out-of-place restore, specify parameters for the restore:

    • VM and Disk: Expand each virtual machine to view the disks in that virtual machine.

    • Change VM display name to: Enter the new display name for the virtual machine.

    • VDC: Select the vDC for the restored VM.

    • VApp: Select the vApp for the restored VM.

    • To specify other options, select one or more virtual machines and then, under the VMware Cloud Director Options column, click Configure.

The VMware vCloud Director Options dialog box appears.

For a single VM, the VM Display Name box displays the name of the virtual machine. If you selected multiple VMs, select Prefix or Suffix and then enter a string to be appended to the source VM names.

      As needed, specify other values:

      • vApp Owner: Select or type the name of the user who owns the destination vApp.

      • Network Adapter: Select a network connection for the restored virtual machine.

If you select Not Connected, the VM is restored without a network connection.

Click OK to save and close the VMware Director Options dialog box.

  10. Click Next.

The wizard displays the Restore Options page.

  11. Optional: Select restore options:

    • Restore vApp Configuration: Restore the vApp network configuration, lease configuration, and virtual machine startup order of the source VM to the new vApp.

    • Power ON Virtual Machine after Restore: Select this check box to start the virtual machine automatically after the restore is complete.

    • Unconditionally Overwrite VM with the same name: Select this check box to replace a virtual machine with the same name at the specified destination.

  12. Click Next.

The wizard displays the Job Options page.

  13. Run the job immediately or configure a schedule for the restore.

  14. Click Next.

The wizard displays a Summary page for the restore.

  15. Click Finish to submit the restore job.
