VMW0049: Metadata collection fails on MBR disk: "GetVolumeInformation Failed!!"

Symptom

After performing an IntelliSnap backup of a virtual machine running Windows Server 2012 R2, attempting a Live Browse of the virtual machine snapshot fails.

The following entries are shown in the cvd.log file for Live Browse or in the vsbkp.log file for the IntelliSnap backup:

CVMWareInfo::_GetFileMountInfo_VCB4() - GetVolumeInformation Failed!! for [mountpath] err=13
CVMWareInfo::_GetFileMountInfo_VCB4() - Failed to get the volume size for [mountpath], 19

The following event is shown in the event viewer:

The default transaction resource manager on volume VolumeID encountered a non-retryable error and could not start. The data contains the error code. The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur in VolumeId: VolumeID, DeviceName: VolumePath.

Cause

If a data set spans multiple partitions on a Master Boot Record (MBR) disk, metadata collection fails; Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) are unable to set the read-only attribute for some partitions and dismount the snapshot.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, either reconfigure the MBR disk to use a single partition or convert the MBR disk to a GUID Partition Table (GPT) disk as described in Auto-recovery fails on all but the first volume of an MBR disk.

Additional Resources

Change a Master Boot Record Disk into a GUID Partition Table Disk

Creating a quiesced snapshot of a Window 2008 R2 virtual machine generates Event IDs 50, 57, 137, 140, or 12289 (2006849)
