Deleting Mailbox Items, Folders or Messages

Administrators can delete mailbox items such as folders, contacts, calendar entries, and messages. Administrators can view the delete history in the audit trail report in the CommCell Console.

Before You Begin

  • The administrator must have the Delete Data capability on the subclient where the Exchange mailbox is configured in the CommCell Console.

  • Archive operations must have run on the user mailbox.

Procedure

  1. In the navigation pane, go to Protect > Applications > Exchange.

    The Exchange page appears.

  2. In the row of the Exchange client that contains that mailbox or folder that you want to delete, click the action button , and then click Restore.

    The page with the mailbox display name appears in the folder view.

  3. You can do the following:

Steps

Folder

  1. In the Name column, click the mailbox, and then click the folder.

  2. Click Delete and then click Selected folder.

    Note: Clear the check boxes for selected items to successfully delete the folder and all items within it.

Message

  1. In the Name column, click the mailbox, and then click the folder.

  2. Next to the message you want to delete, select the check box.

  3. Click Delete and then click Selected items.

Mailbox

  1. Select the check box for the mailbox.

  2. Click Delete and then click Selected Items.

    Note:

  • To exclude a mailbox from further backup operations, in the row for the mailbox, click the action button , and then click Manage > Remove from content. The status of these mailboxes is updated as Deleted.

  • To permanently delete all the data that has been backed up, in the row for the mailbox, click the action button , and then click Manage > Delete from backup. The data is no longer available for browsing and recovery.

Messages in bulk

  1. In the Name column, click the mailbox, and then click the folder.

  2. In the Search section, click the Search box and apply the search filters, and then click Search. For more information, see Search Filters.

  3. In the upper-left corner of the Search results, select the check box to select all items.

  4. Click Delete and then select Items in current page or Items across all pages.

    A message prompts you to confirm the deletion.

  5. Click Yes.

Note: Messages deleted by the administrator in the Command Center are not visible by the end user in the Web Console, but messages deleted by the end user can be viewed by the administrator by selecting Include deleted items and are marked with a icon.

Results

  • The delete operation deletes the messages or the folder permanently.

  • You cannot access deleted items from the Commvault software.

  • You can view deleted emails from Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Web Access (OWA). The stubbed emails that were deleted cannot be recalled from Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Web Access (OWA).
