Deploying HyperScale X Appliance With Bonded 10G Data Protection and Storage Pool Network and 1G Management Network Interface

HyperScale X Appliance can be setup with bonded Data Protection and Storage Pool interfaces, and a separate Management interface.

Network can be setup using 4-10GigE ports and 1 - 1 GigE port per node as follows:

  • 1 - 1 GigE port for Management network (Routable network with DNS Access)

  • 2 - 10GigE bonded ports for Data Protection

  • 2 - 10GigE bonded ports for Storage Pool (Non-routable, private network used for Storage Pool communication)

Note: Management and Data Protection networks should be on 2 different subnets.

This setup requires 3 IP addresses per node. (Use the Pre-Installation Checklist to collect the information needed to setup the nodes.)

If you plan to attach the nodes to an existing CommServe server, provision the CommServe server with 2 network connections as follows:

  • 1 network connection to the Management network

  • 1 network connection to the Data Protection network

The above networks can be on 1 GB ethernet for this purpose.

Before You Begin

Complete the following before you start:

  • Ensure that the bonded connections are setup using the guidelines provided in Cabling HyperScale X Appliance for Redundant Networking.

  • Using ping or any other DNS command / tool, ensure that the DNS entries are available for each of the nodes. Ensure that both the forward and reverse lookups are available for all the IP addresses in the nodes.

  • If you plan to attach the nodes to an existing CommServe, make sure that you are logged in as an user with necessary permissions on the CommServe to install the software. For more information about the permissions needed to setup the node as a client in the CommServe, see User Security Permissions by Feature - Deployment. (If necessary, the deployment permission can be removed for the user after the installation, as this permission check is performed only when the nodes are registered in the CommServe.)

Procedure

  1. Power on the nodes.

    Recommended: Power on 3 un-configured nodes at a time. (If you have more than 3 un-configured nodes, you can add the other nodes later.)

    Tip:

    Press <Alt> + <Ctrl> + <F2> if the login prompt is not displayed.

    Note down the serial number (Hostname) of the node. This will be useful to identify the node during setup.

  2. Login to any one of the nodes using the following default credentials:

    Login: root

    Password: cvadmin

  3. Navigate to the following folder:

    # /opt/commvault/MediaAgent
  4. Execute the following command to generate an input configuration file for the Management network using the routable network:

    ./cvconfignw.py -g <output configuration file path for management network>
  5. Edit the configuration file to add the details of the device and the routable network.

    For example, the entries in this file should be similar to the following:

  6. Execute the following command to apply the settings for the Management network:

    ./cvconfignw.py -c <config file path>
  7. Setup the bonding for the Data Protection network, using the following command:

    ./cvnwlacpbond.py -c -m active-backup -t dp -i 172.19.96.54 -n 255.255.252.0 -nr
  8. Setup the bonding for the Storage Pool network, using the following command:

    ./cvnwlacpbond.py -c -m active-backup -t sp -i 192.168.47.120 -n 255.255.255.0
  9. Repeat steps 1 to 8 to create the network in the other nodes.

  10. From any one of the nodes, create a block using the following command:

    # ./cvavahi.py set_blkid <block id> <node1 serial number> <node2 serial number> <node3 serial number>

    Where:

    <block id> is an unique, unused name for the block.

    <node1 serial number> <node2 serial number> <node3 serial number> is the Hostname, or node serial numbers associated with the nodes. The serial numbers will be displayed in the opening screen when a node is booted.

  11. Open a Web browser from any computer that can connect to the nodes.

  12. Type the IP address associated with the Management network, that was added in the configuration.

  13. The login dialog box is displayed.

    Type root as the Username and cvadmin as the Password.

  14. The Provide Node Information page is displayed.

    1. In the Root password and Confirm password boxes, type the password for the nodes. The password must not contain \ (backslash), ' (single quote), and blank spaces.

    2. Move the Click for advanced Settings toggle key to the right.

  15. The Node 1, Node 2 and Node 3 tabs along with serial numbers associated with each node is displayed. The available network interfaces in the hardware is displayed on the left, for each node.

    Tip: Hover the cursor over the check box associated with the interface to display the network capacity and other information associated with the interface.

  16. Verify the Management interface as follows:

    1. Select the check box associated with a 1 GigE interface. (enpsf2 in the sample image.)

    2. From the Network Type list, select Management.

      Note: It is important that the Network Type is set to Management for the management network.

      Once completed your screen should be similar to the following image:

    3. Verify and validate the Network Type, and IP Address and Netmask addresses associated with the interface in Node 1, Node 2, and Node 3 tabs, using the data collected in the Pre-Installation Checklist.

  17. Clear the check box associated with the Management interface.

  18. Verify the bonded Data Protection interface as follows:

    1. Select the check box associated with bond1.

    2. From the Network Type list, select CommServe Registration.

      Note: It is important that the Network Type is set to CommServe registration for the data protection network.

      Once completed your screen should be similar to the following image:

    3. Verify and validate the Network Type, and IP Address and Netmask addresses associated with the interface in Node 1, Node 2, and Node 3 tabs, using the data collected in the Pre-Installation Checklist.

  19. Clear the check box associated with the Data Protection interface.

  20. Verify the bonded Storage Pool interface as follows:

    1. Select the check box associated with bond2.

    2. From the Network Type list, select StoragePool.

      Note: It is important that the Network Type is set to StoragePool for the storage pool network.

      Once completed your screen should be similar to the following image:

    3. Verify and validate the Network Type, and IP Address and Netmask addresses associated with the interface in Node 1, Node 2, and Node 3 tabs, using the data collected in the Pre-Installation Checklist.

  21. Clear the check box associated with the Data Protection interface.

  22. Click Next Step.

    The setup process validates the network information and will take some time to complete.

  23. The Provide Network Information page is displayed.

    Verify and validate the IP addresses associated with the Default Gateway and DNS Servers using the data collected in the Pre-Installation Checklist.

    If necessary, edit the information to make sure that the correct IP addresses are provided.

  24. Click Next.

    The setup process validates the network information and will take some time to complete.

  25. The CommServe Information page is displayed.
