Deploying HyperScale X Appliance With Tagged vLAN on Bonded Network Interfaces

HyperScale X Appliance can be setup on tagged vLANs, with bonded network interfaces.

Bonding can be setup using 4 - 10GigE ports per node as follows:

  • 2 - 10GigE bonded ports for Data Protection, which can include:

    • 2 or more vLAN IDs

    • 2 or more IP addresses based on the number of vLANs

  • 2 - 10GigE bonded ports for internal Storage Pool communication

The number of IP addresses required for this setup depends on the number of vLANs. For example, if you have 2 vLANs (For example, 96 and 100) then you will require 3 IP addresses per node, as follows:

  • 2 for the vLAN, which will be used for Data Protection network. (If you have additional vLANs, you will need additional IP addresses for each additional vLAN.)

    Out of the 2 VLANs, one network should be routable and the other network(s) must be non-routable. In addition to data protection, the routable network will be used for CommServe Registration. All the other vLANs will be used for data protection.

  • 1 for the Storage Pool network

Use the Pre-Installation Checklist to collect the information needed to setup the nodes.

Before You Begin

  • Ensure that the vLANs are provisioned and available on the Ethernet switches connected to the HyperScale nodes.

  • Ensure that the bonded connections are setup using the guidelines provided in Cabling HyperScale X Appliance for Redundant Networking.

  • Using ping or any other DNS command / tool, ensure that the DNS entries are available for each of the nodes. Ensure that both the forward and reverse lookups are available for all the IP addresses in the nodes.

  • If you plan to attach the nodes to an existing CommServe, make sure that you are logged in as an user with necessary permissions on the CommServe to install the software. For more information about the permissions needed to setup the node as a client in the CommServe, see User Security Permissions by Feature - Deployment. (If necessary, the deployment permission can be removed for the user after the installation, as this permission check is performed only when the nodes are registered in the CommServe.)

Procedure

  1. Power on the nodes.

    Recommended: Power on 3 un-configured nodes at a time. (If you have more than 3 un-configured nodes, you can add the other nodes later.)

    Tip:

    Press <Alt> + <Ctrl> + <F2> if the login prompt is not displayed.

    Note down the serial number (Hostname) of the node. This will be useful to identify the node during setup.

  2. Login to any one of the nodes using the following default credentials:

    Login: root

    Password: cvadmin

  3. Navigate to the following folder:

    # /opt/commvault/MediaAgent
  4. Setup the bonding on the node, using the commands, similar to the following examples:

    1. Use the following command to add the routable vLAN, which includes the entries for the Gateway (-g option)and Nameservers (-d option). Multiple NameServers can be added, if necessary.

      ./cvnwlacpbond.py -c -m 802.3ad -t dp -i 100.10.10.120 -n 255.255.240.0 -g 100.10.10.1 -d 100.10.2.160 100.10.2.170 -v 732
    2. Use the following command to add additional vLANs. (Note that command does not include the options for the Gateway (-g option)and Nameservers (-d option).

      ./cvnwlacpbond.py -c -m 802.3ad -t dp -i 172.19.96.54 -n 255.255.252.0 -v 96 -nr
    3. Use the following command to add the Storage pool network. VLANs cannot be added to the storage pool interface(s).

      ./cvnwlacpbond.py -c -m 802.3ad -t sp -i 192.168.47.120 -n 255.255.255.0

      For example, if you have 5 vLANs in your environment, you would have to run the following commands to setup the vLAN interfaces:

      ./cvnwlacpbond.py -c -m 802.3ad -t dp -i 100.10.10.120 -n 255.255.240.0 -g 100.10.10.1 -d 100.10.2.160 100.10.2.170 -v 732

      ./cvnwlacpbond.py -c -m 802.3ad -t dp -i 172.19.96.54 -n 255.255.252.0 -v 96 -nr

      ./cvnwlacpbond.py -c -m 802.3ad -t dp -i 172.19.100.10 -n 255.255.252.0 -v 100 -nr

      ./cvnwlacpbond.py -c -m 802.3ad -t dp -i 172.19.108.20 -n 255.255.252.0 -v 108 -nr

      ./cvnwlacpbond.py -c -m 802.3ad -t dp -i 172.19.113.20 -n 255.255.252.0 -v 112 -nr

      ./cvnwlacpbond.py -c -m 802.3ad -t sp -i 192.168.47.120 -n 255.255.255.0
  5. From any one of the nodes, create a block using the following command:

    # ./cvavahi.py set_blkid <block id> <node1 serial number> <node2 serial number> <node3 serial number>

    Where:

    <block id> is an unique, unused name for the block.

    <node1 serial number> <node2 serial number> <node3 serial number> is the Hostname, or node serial numbers associated with the nodes. The serial numbers will be displayed in the opening screen when a node is booted.

  6. Reboot the nodes.

    # reboot
  7. Verify that the routable network is reachable from all nodes, using ping or any other DNS command / tool.

  8. Open a Web browser from any computer that can connect to the nodes.

  9. Type the IP address associated with the routable network, that was added in the configuration. (Use http instead of https. For example, http://101.102.103.104.

  10. The login dialog box is displayed.

    Type root as the Username and cvadmin as the Password.

  11. The Provide Node Information page is displayed.

    1. In the Root password and Confirm password boxes, type the password for the nodes. The password must not contain \ (backslash), ' (single quote), and blank spaces.

    2. Move the Click for advanced Settings toggle key to the right.

  12. The Node 1, Node 2 and Node 3 tabs along with serial numbers associated with each node is displayed. The available network interfaces in the hardware is displayed on the left, for each node.

    Note: The routable vLAN (bond1.732 ), the non routable data protection vLANs (bond1.100, bond1.108, bond1.112, and bond1.96) and the bonded storage pool network (bond1.96), which was setup in step 4 above is displayed. Your screen may be different, depending on your vLAN IDs and the number of vLANs.

  13. Verify the Data Protection interface, with a tagged vLAN ID using the following steps:

    1. Select the checkbox associated with the routable data protection vLAN. (bond1.732 in the above example.)

    2. Verify the IP Address, Netmask and Network Type associated with the vLAN in Node 1, Node 2, and Node 3 tabs, using the data collected in the Pre-Installation Checklist.

      Verify that the Network Type is set to CommServe Registration. If necessary, edit the information to make sure that the correct IP addresses are provided.

    3. Clear the checkbox associated with the interface.

    4. Select the checkbox associated with the non-routable data protection vLAN. (bond1.100, bond1.108, bond1.112, and bond1.96 in the above example.)

    5. Verify the IP Address, Netmask and Network Type associated with the vLAN in Node 1, Node 2, and Node 3 tabs, using the data collected in the Pre-Installation Checklist.

      Verify that the Network Type is set to Data Protection. If necessary, edit the information to make sure that the correct IP addresses are provided.

    6. Clear the checkbox associated with the interface.

  14. OPTIONAL: If necessary add additional vLANs for the Data Protection interface, using the following steps:

    1. Select the bond 1 check box.

    2. From the Network Type list, select Data Protection.

    3. Click the Create VLANS button.

      The VLANs ID pop-up will be displayed.

    4. Type the VLAN ID that must be used for the interface. For example vLAN 10.

    5. Click Enter.

      The vLAN interface will be displayed as shown in the following image:

    6. Select check box associated with the vLAN interface. (bond1.10 in the above image.)

    7. From the Network Type list, select Data Protection.

      Once completed your screen should be similar to the following image:

    8. Verify and validate the IP Address and Netmask addresses associated with the interface in Node 1, Node 2, and Node 3 tabs using the data collected in the Pre-Installation Checklist.

      If necessary, edit the information to make sure that the correct IP addresses are provided.

    9. Clear the check box associated with the Data Protection interface.

    10. OPTIONAL: Repeat the steps to configure the additional vLAN interfaces, if additional VLAN interfaces must be configured.

      Note: Once complete, make sure to clear the check box associated with the vLAN interface(s), before moving to the next step.

  15. Verify the Storage Pool interface using the following steps.

    Note: VLANs cannot be added to the storage pool interface(s).

    1. Select the check boxes associated with the storage pool interface. (bond2 in the above example.)

    2. Verify and validate the IP Address and Netmask addresses associated with the interface in Node 1, Node 2, and Node 3 tabs using the data collected in the Pre-Installation Checklist.

      If necessary, edit the information to make sure that the correct IP addresses are provided.

    3. Clear the check box associated with the Storage Pool interface.

  16. Click Next Step.

    The setup process validates the network information and will take some time to complete.

  17. The Provide Network Information page is displayed.

    Verify and validate the IP addresses associated with the Default Gateway and DNS Servers using the data collected in the Pre-Installation Checklist.

    If necessary, edit the information to make sure that the correct IP addresses are provided.

  18. Click Next.

    The setup process validates the network information and will take some time to complete.

  19. The CommServe Information page is displayed.

    Depending on your deployment, choose an appropriate method for configuring the CommServe as described in Deploying the CommServe Server.
