Performing an Unplanned Failover for a Continuous Replication Group

Updated

You can perform an unplanned failover operation for an entire replication group to make the destination VMs active in an emergency situation. Only VMs that are eligible fail over. After a replication group failover, replication operations are disabled for the VMs that failed over. You can perform a replication group failback operation to return replication operations to all source sites in the replication group.

Before You Begin

Create a continuous replication group.

Note: You cannot customize IP address settings for VMs with encrypted disks. If you configure custom IP address settings for a replication group that includes VMs with encrypted disks, failover operations fail for those VMs.

Procedure

  1. From the navigation pane, go to Disaster Recovery.

    The Replication groups page appears.

  2. Under Group name, click a replication group.

The replication group details page appears.

  3. On the Overview tab, in the upper-right area of the page, click Unplanned failover.

The Unplanned failover dialog box appears.

  4. Click Submit.

The failover occurs to the most recent recovery point.

Result

  • Operations move to the destination VMs.

  • If errors occur during an unplanned failover, the job will try to complete.
