Setting Up a Network Gateway Connection Using a Predefined Network Topology - Client Type is Laptops


If you are setting up group-to-group network connectivity through a network gateway, consider using a network topology instance.

Note: With the topology for a network gateway connection, you can configure multiple client computers (in this case, laptops) to provide a single logical network gateway function.

Before You Begin

  • Set up the Commvault network gateway. For more information, see Setting up the Commvault network gateway.

  • The network topology instance requires the following client groups.

    • An infrastructure group, to will contain the CommServe server and internal MediaAgents.

    • A client group, to contain all laptops.

    • A network gateway client group, to be the network gateway client.

      For information about how to create a group, see Adding or Editing a Server Group.

  • You must have administrative management permissions on the client groups that you plan to use in the network topology instance.

  • Servers/laptops and infrastructure computers should be able to open connections to network gateway on the tunnel port.


  1. From the navigation pane, go to Manage > Network > Network Topologies.

    The Network topologies page appears.

  2. Click Add topology.

    The Add topology dialog box appears.

  3. In the Name box, enter a name for this instance of a network gateway connection.

  4. For Client type, select Laptops.

  5. From the Topology type list, select Network Gateway.

  6. Perform the following steps:

    1. In the Laptops list, select a laptop group that will initiate connections to the network gateway group.

    2. Optional: Click the down arrow next to the Laptops list to edit the following options:

      • Tunnel port. Set this to Default (8403), or click the edit icon to enter another port number.

      • Keep-alive interval. The interval (in seconds) for sending keep-alive packets, to maintain the session if backup traffic has an extended pause. Set this to 180 (default), or click the edit icon to enter another interval. To avoid idle session timeouts on cloud-based clients, set the interval to 200 seconds or less.

    3. In the Network gateways list, select the server group that you want to designate as the network gateway group.

    4. Optional: Click the down arrow next to the Network gateways list to edit the Tunnel port and Keep-alive interval options, as described above.

    5. In the Infrastructure machines list, select a server group that will initiate connections to the network gateway group.

    6. Review the Laptops will automatically use network gateways to connect to all Infrastructure machines toggle key as follows:

      • Important: If you use a port-forwarding gateway or Commvault VPN services, move the toggle key to the left.

      • To allow external clients to communicate directly with other hosts, move the toggle key to the left or define network routes to the other hosts. All traffic originating from clients in the Laptops group will use network routes when communicating with any other host.

      • If you move the toggle key to the right, note that the CommServe host and all MediaAgent hosts (that communicate with members of the Servers group) must be in the selected Infrastructure group. Otherwise, you must set up direct network routes from the clients to the MediaAgents.

      • If you move the toggle key to the right, a client communicates with MediaAgents (or a CommServe server) that are not part of the Infrastructure group or that have not been configured with other network routes, communications with the MediaAgent (or CommServe server) will fail.

  7. Optional: Move the Advanced toggle key to the right to edit the following options:

    • Move the Encrypt traffic toggle key to the right to encrypt network traffic (HTTPS).

    • Select Encrypted, Authenticated, Regular, or Raw from the tunnel protocol list.

    • Select the Parallel data transfer streams for long distance networks (default value is 1, and maximum value is 8).

  8. Click Save.

What to Do Next

If your clients do not have the Commvault software installed, install the Commvault software on the clients that will be part of the network topology.

Note: Make sure to assign the client to the Servers that you defined in the topology.
