Preparing for a Full System Recovery for SAP Archive Link Agent

To prepare for full system recovery, you must run regular backups of the ContentStore directory and the PostgreSQL database on the production computer.


  1. Install the PostgreSQL Agent and SAP Archive Link Agent on the client computer.

    Make a note of the following configurations that you provide during the PostgreSQL iDataAgent installation.

    • Installation path

    • Postgres server password

    • Port number used by the Postgres server

    • Port  number used by the Apache Tomcat server

    • Job results location configured for the ContentStore

  2. Back up the ContentStore directory.

    1. From the CommCell Console, expand Client Computers > Client > File System.

    2. Right-click the defaultBackupSet, point to All Tasks and click New Subclient.

    3. In the Subclient name box, type a name for the subclient.

    4. Click the Content tab.

    5. Click Browse. Navigate to the ContentStore directory as was specified during the installation. By default, this directory typically exists under /opt/<Installation_path>/iDataAgent/jobResults/. For example: /opt/Commvault/iDataAgent/JobResults/ContentStore.

      Note: You can retrieve the ContentStore directory path from the fileRepository registry key located in /etc/CommVaultRegistry/Galaxy/Instance001/OBJSRV/.properties.

    6. Click Add to add the path to the subclient content.

    7. Click the Storage Device tab.

      In the Storage Policy box, select a Storage Policy name and then click OK.

    8. Right-click the newly created subclient and click backup.

    9. Select the required backup type and thenclick OK.

      You can track the progress of the job from the Job Controller window of the CommCell console.

  3. Configure the PostgreSQL instance in the PostgreSQL iDataAgent.

    1. From the CommCell Console, expand Client Computers > Client.

    2. Right-click PostgreSQLand point to All Tasks > New PostgresSQL Instance.

    3. In the Server Name box, type the Server Name.

    4. In the PostGres User Name box, type the user name to access the Postgres application.

    5. In the PostGres Account Password box, type the Postgres User Account Password and Confirm the Password.

    6. In the PostGres Confirm Password box, type the Postgres Password to Confirm the Password.

    7. In the Maintenance DB box,type the name of the system database (postgres).

    8. In the Binary Directory box,type the path to the Postgres application. Alternatively click Browse to locate the path.

    9. In the Lib Directory box, type the path to the library directory for the instance. For example, /opt/PostgreSQL/8.4/lib.

    10. In the Archive Log Directory box, type the path to any existing Postgres directory. For example, /opt/PostgreSQL/8.4/data.

      Note: It is not required  to configure the archive log directory.

      To skip the check for a valid archive log directory, on the client computer, add the sSkipWalCheck additional setting with value Y.

      Refer to the following table for applicable values:










      Y - to skip the check for archive log directory

      N- to allow the check for a valid archive log directory

    11. In the Port box, type or select the port to open the communication between PostgreSQL Server and the clients.

      Note: Enter the port number for the Postgres server that you specified during the PostgreSQL iDataAgent installation.

    12. In the Log Backup Storage Policy box, select a storage policy to be used for the transaction log backup jobs under Log Backup section.

    13. Click OK.

  4. Configure a storage policy for the default subclient.

    • From the CommCell Browser, navigate to Client Computers | <Client>| PostgreSQL | <Instance> | DumpBaseBackupSet.

    • Right-click the default subclient and then click Properties.

    • Click the Storage Device tab.

    • In the Storage Policy box, select the storage policy name.

    • Click OK.

  5. Schedule backups of the DumpBasedBackupSet.
