Restoring Amazon EC2 Instances and Files

You can restore full Amazon EC2 instances or guest files and folders, or restore an Amazon EBS volume and attach it to a new or existing Amazon EC2 instance.

  • You can configure an AWS VM group to perform IntelliSnap backups. From the snap or backup copy, you can restore full EC2 instances, restore an EBS volume and attach it to an existing EC2 instance, and restore guest files and folders.

  • For full VM restores from IntelliSnap backups, Commvault neither explicitly performs nor waits for volume initialization.

  • Fast snapshot restores (FSRs) are not supported.

  • To restore Amazon EC2 instances that have UEFI boot mode enabled, a UEFI-enabled Amazon Machine Image (AMI) must be present in the destination AWS account.

  • For information about restoring Amazon EC2 instances to a different hypervisor, see Cross-Hypervisor Restores (VM Conversion).

  • For restore operations that meet all the following conditions, the HotAdd restore method is used. If any of the conditions are not met, the import method is used.

    • The access node that is used is an Amazon EC2 instance.

    • The access node that is used is in the same AWS zone as the instance that is being restored.

    • Windows guest VM credentials are specified for the restore operation (credentials are not required for Linux guest VMs).

    • If an access node running Windows is used for the operation, the Amazon folder under the Commvault install_directory must contain the AWSPVDriverSetup.msi and Ec2Install.exe components.
