Cleaning Up Messages Using the Exchange Mailbox Agent

Message cleanup is performed separately from message archiving.

Mailbox cleanup operations creates stubs for successfully backed up emails.

Note

You must add a recall services link in the Exchange mailbox's Properties to successfully conduct mailbox cleanup operations. For more information about adding a recall services link, see Configuring Recall Services.

User Mailbox

Depending on what you configured in the Exchange cleanup policy, you can do the following:

  • Stub, and then delete messages from the Exchange server.

  • Delete messages from the Exchange server without stubbing the messages. This is also known as source pruning.

  • Stub or delete only the messages that include attachments.

Note

Cleanup is not supported for public folders.

What Is Stubbed

  • Mailboxes

  • Disabled mailboxes

  • Archive mailboxes

  • Email messages

What Is Not Stubbed

  • Non-email messages such as appointments, contacts, and so on

Journal Mailbox

If you enabled cleanup in the Exchange journal policy, you can delete the contents of the journal mailbox on the Exchange server.

ContentStore Mailbox

If you enabled cleanup in the Exchange journal policy, you can delete the messages from mailbox on the ContentStore Mail Server (SMTP).
